Subject: Meeting re NLG support for Occupy Detroit - 12/12, Anchor
Bar, 6:00 pm
To NLG Membership, NLG Legal Observers, Occupy Detroit Legal Committee
and anyone from Occupy Detroit with legal questions or issues:
(Please forward widely to Occupy Detroit contacts.)
Since the inception of Occupy Detroit (OD), the local chapter of the
National Lawyers Guild has been providing Legal Observers for
demonstrations, representation for arrested protesters, and other
legal support, including negotiating with the City on behalf of Occupy
Detroit re the encampment at Grand Circus Park. We will continue to
do all this.
However, now that OD has moved indoors for the winter and is putting
together it’s long term organizational structure and strategies, we
(NLG Detroit) thought this would be a great time to gather all the NLG
people willing to work to support Occupy Detroit and meet with folks
from the various OD working groups, affinity groups, committees, etc.
to see what other legal-related issues and needs we might help
address. This might include issues about handling finances, reviewing
leases, dealing with the City on code-enforcement issues, perhaps
helping to draft community agreements, exploring options for
organizational structure, non-profit status, etc.
Please join us Monday, December 12, 2011, at the Anchor Bar (450 W.
Fort Street, Detroit) starting at 6:00 pm for a broad ranging
discussion of what more we can do to support Occupy Detroit.
Hopefully we can meet in the back room of the Anchor, but if not,
upstairs in my office. Either way, food and beverages will be
available from the Anchor.
If you can’t make the meeting, please call or e-mail me with ideas
about things you can help with or things we can do to assist OD. We
do need more Legal Observers and more attorneys with demonstration
experience to be the “Lead” Legal Observers for OD actions. We have a
great, but small base of people doing this work . . . we’ll need many
more if “Occupy” turns out to be the tipping point we have all hoped
for for so long!
First Justice, Then Peace!
