Hello!

I saw on the Occupy Burners Facebook Page that there was a need for a logo. This my first (rough) draft/idea. I intend to get a better font for the "Occupy Burners" text and use a digital image for the Man. I think this is a good representation of my idea. I want it to mimic the Preamble in look. If this is in line with what may have been envisioned so far please let me know. I will continue to work and refine the idea but wanted to throw in my first hand drawn concept for edits/comments/ideas.

Thanks!!!
Gypsy

I suspect that, if the Man aspect is not made more derivative, we invite legal action by the Org.

I like this as a first draft. It looks like sort of a burnt page motif? I'd like us to have something adaptable to use in patches & t-shirts as well as on Facebook, can we make that possible with this idea?

That is something to consider, although a great deal of leeway does seem to be allowed on this, and we're not planning to sell it in any way, but maybe we should make it a little more symbolic just to make sure.

More derivative how? I can make it more vague/abstract if need be.

I think the "policy" is to ignore usage that isn't for profit, but put it on a T-shirt and charge 5 bucks and we might have an issue. I'll do an inquiry and see what I can find out.

Kit,

I was going for a old, aged parchment look. Like the quintessential Constitution look I think most people think of. I'll do one like that and one without the vintage look.

Yeah, more vague or abstract.

Even if we're not selling it, Occupy is something the Org has been skittish about, I just don't relish the fallout.

I know, I'm willing to go up against multinationals and the feds, bit not the Org. I'm weird.

What else is uniquely Burning Man? I am racking my brain trying to think of something that makes you automatically think playa other than the simple Man in stick form. Suggestions anyone?

Anyway to put the playa map as a background, or do ya think that'll make the whole thing too "busy"? I'm pretty sure its simply for-profit useage they don't like, but I'll try and get some clarification on that asap. (And yea, that one "reads" better, as far as the text goes)

I think the playa map is too much. I can't find anything that's simple lines of the map that doesn't look just icky in a logo. As far as getting in trouble for using the man goes, people have been "borrowing" it forever now. How many of us have used it in the design of some kind of logo for our camp? I know that my camp has used it and nothing bad has followed. I believe that if we use it strictly as a logo and don't go using it to sell items we should be fine.

I like all of these, but I like the grid more, as it's more inclusive (it could be ANY map, really, but those 'in the know'... well, know!).

And obviously it should say occupy burners on it, but... maybe not in the middle? I feel that it detracts from the message. I get that you want people to know who you are, but then it's like the only people who are people are occupy burner people.

Yea, I like the map, too. But I just love that design. (Thank you Mr. Garrett) It reminds me of the amerindian thunderbird pictographs, not to mention its a city built around the city commons. If we could just hedge the "Occupy Burners" into a lower corner or something?

You don't want the Occupy Burners off to one side or hiding in a corner. That's just bad branding. That's why We The People is a different font. I've done my fair share of marketing for plenty of high profile companies. Occupy Burners needs to be centered, prominent, not shoved off to the back ground. A solution could be to make "We The People" a shade of grey or something. Although everyone I have shown this to (non burners mostly) sees the "Occupy Burners" as separate and doesn't run the words together. The design doesn't really work with the aerial shot of BRC because there is too much going on. Simple is always the best when it comes to logos and branding.

The difference is that your camp logo is for the burn. This is not a sanctioned use; it has, in the Org's eyes, nothing to do with the event; and is in fact related to something they have gone through considerable effort to not take an official position on.

I asked specifically about Occupy Burners using the Man for its logo. The response was "Meh. It's a cultural reference and not used in commerce so we wouldn't have reason to worry about it much"

The reason the org trademarked the Man was to stop folks from profiting from it. As long as we aren't selling anything with the Man on it, we're fine.

I see your point, but we are also not using the Man logo from the BM site. Their Man is more pointy and angled, not rounded. And currently the page is displaying the Man in their logo anyway. So even if we use nothing from this thread we are still using the Man as the Occupy Burners logo.

I love Ian's logo too -- and the idea of having a tricorner hat on yours, Gypsy. Since the BMORG is not concerned about our use then neither am I -- and of course we will oppose commercial use of our material, as I feel that's antagonistic to our values, those of Burning Man, AND those of Occupy.

Gypsy, let us see a draft with the tricorner hat. I am going to use Ian's logo on our Twitter for the moment. We can and should have multiple images to represent us.

I like this a LOT. I know it may look a little busy right now. But
if we cleaned it up, and maybe made sure there was no overlap of words
over the map photo, it would be perfect. To me the significance of
the temporary city we build every year in conjunction with OCCUPY
building tent cities all over the planet is very poignant and
meaningful.

Okay, here we go. It might even work without "Occupy" underneath it since the Guy Fawkes mask has become such a symbol of the Occupy Movement.

to Occupy Burners (Burning Man/OWS)
I like the simple, but if we're doing a themes mashup then could the
head be a hashtag or @? It already looks like typography: )'( which
is something people associate with the internet, so something that is
organized over twitter like OWS has some built-in symbols to be played
with. If we could make the Man a large # with an @ for a head or
something that is both more derivative and theme unifying.

I like it. Thank you for this, Gypsy!

Obviously since we are working in the creative commons, people are free to play with their own derivations or the other ideas we have tossed around. We can have many logos for what we do.

Great working with y'all.
