from Chris Goodwin (long time Boulder progressive activist). Was the
president of Local 3592 of AFSCME (American Federation of State,
County, Municipal Employees) union local on the CU Boulder campus for
many years. After he retired as a CU employee, he became an organizer
for Colorado WINS (merged union of AFSCME, SEIU and AFT classified
state employees). In the 1970s, he ran for Boulder City Council with
lots of good ideas. He was also in the group that founded Left Hand
Books. Probably leaving out other stuff.

Proposal #1: From Chris Goodwin.
OCCUPY BOULDER GRASSROOTS OUTREACH PROJECT
WHAT & WHY?
Regular (every 3 or 4 weeks), issue oriented leafleting of targeted
areas of Boulder.
This kind of outreach effort is an opportunity to take OCCUPY’s
message out to people who we might not normally have contact with and
bring new people into the movement, as well as reconnect with people
who might have drifted away.
In order for this effort to give OCCUPY a consistent, ongoing presence
and keep the OCCUPY message out there in the neighborhoods, this
cannot be a one shot effort or less frequent than once a month or it
will be nothing but a piece of paper left at some ones door.
We can use this kind of outreach to get the word out about any issue,
action, or event. Its uses can be as varied as OCCUPY wants it to be.
WHO & WHERE?
Apartment complexes and mobile home parks are where a large % of
Boulders low and moderate income people (the 99%) live. Also, about
53% of Boulder residents are renters. It is also doubtful that, at
least at the beginning, that we would have the number of people needed
to cover the whole city. Better to start out small and be able to do
these areas more frequently, reaching out to people who will be or
already have been, the most receptive to the OCCUPY message.
FLYERS
Flyers should be short and to the point and when possible, give people
some kind of action to take.
Maybe one issue on each side of an 8½x11 sheet. They should always
include contact info (web site, facebook etc.) and any info about
upcoming events, actions etc. They should always be issue oriented and
like OCCUPY itself, remain independent of political parties and
candidates campaigns.
LOGISTICS
Do target areas on Saturdays. Keep people’s areas small. This should
be made as easy as possible to do. No one should be flyering for more
than 2 hours. Meet afterward to talk about how things went.
Hopefully areas can be done by the same people each time. This would
help make things go more smoothly since people would become familiar
with their areas and also the people who live there.
Also allow people to do their own area/neighborhood even if it falls
outside our target areas.
This might be limited by the number of leaflets/$ for printing, but we
should try hard to say yes to anyone who volunteers to help.
COMMITMENT, PERSISTENCE, PATIENCE
This should not be seen as a short term, temporary project. There
will be no instant results. We shouldn’t expect a sudden increase in
numbers of people at demonstrations, GAs etc. Success will be hard to
measure. This will require a long term commitment, persistence and a
lot of patience.
