# New Year Greetings and Gratitude
Hard to believe it's the second decade of the century already, isn't it? As we bid the holidays farewell, and welcome a year of new promises, OCC is renewing our commitment to work for an end to war and its causes. We hope you will join us in support for conscientious objectors, service members seeking discharge, and young people needing a broader range of career options that serve people, community and country -- without war.

Many thanks to those who contributed time, funding and other support to our work in 2009. We literally could not do this without you. A special note of gratitude to Joy Mennonite Church, which provides us office and meeting space, as well as fiscal sponsorship. We also are sponsored by the OKC Friends Meeting, Veterans for Peace, and Pax Christi of Eastern Oklahoma.

# Counter Recruitment Intensive
Next Saturday, Jan. 9 from 1 - 3:30 pm, we will have a workshop for counter-recruitment activism. We'll be doing hands-on training, role-playing and introducing volunteers to the best resources for their own education on the topic, and the best tools for raising public awareness. Mark your calendars and plan to attend. Students especially needed for peer outreach!

Our CR program will involve outreach to youth in schools, community programs, and at public events. This workshop aims to get volunteers ready for this work.

The workshop will be held at the Scissortail Social Space, 3012 N Walker, Oklahoma City, OK. We're grateful to the Scissortail folks for letting us use the space. Check out more about SSS at http://scissortailokc.wordpress.com/

# GI Rights Hotline / Legal support for GIs
With the escalation of the military action in Afghanistan, and now the announcement that thousands of members of the Oklahoma National Guard will be deployed there in 2011, we are expecting an increase in calls and emails to the Oklahoma GI Rights Hotline. We will soon be having some introductory and advanced training sessions for lay counselors, so please give some thought to volunteering for this vital work. In the meantime, if you know of any active duty service member who need help seeking a discharge, whether for medical, hardship, or conscientious objection, have them call 405-231-1138. The hotline also can help with issues of harassment and discrimination.

# Readings on War and Peace
A Lesson on Nonviolence for the President - a response to President Obama's Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech

Excerpt: "... these incredible victories for nonviolence were not flukes. After analyzing 323 resistance campaigns over the last century, one important study published last year in the journal International Security, found that "major nonviolent campaigns have achieved success 53 percent of the time, compared with 26 percent for violent resistance campaigns. ..."

That's all for now. We'll have another issue of OCC News later this month, so we can update you about our counter-recruitment project and other activities. Thanks again for your interest and support.
