I used WestHost.com (aff. link) for several years to host our sites and can vouch for their quality. It is VPS hosting which is more powerful than regular shared hosting as it provides full root like control of your virtual server.
Currently their starting plan is $8.95 / m which comes to less than Rs 400 per month. Compare this with ewebguru starting silver plan and you will see the difference, not the mention the VPS advantage.

BTW: You should always go with US based providers as they provide better value for money.

My calculation was slightly off. At 46 Rs = 1 USD it comes to Rs. 411.7 :)

I just wanted to reply with my own 2 cents - please, an entrepreneur
that would be found in a group like this should know, without having
to be told, to support Indian businesses - maybe we don't have the
infrastructure of the US, but anyway, how're the companies here going
to get big and better if everyone does a ditch, and simply goes off to
their competitors because they're offering a better deal *At The
Time*? There are brave souls here, at Net4Domains - www.net4domains.com
, who have an offering for hosting in all the major Indian cities I
think (I've personally visited their offices in Mumbai, Delhi and
Kolkata), please try them - their pricing plans are on their website,
I don't think it'll be too much, and yes, they do offer Perl, but for
some reason they charge EXTRA for MySQL, despite the fact that MySQL
is free!!! I've never understood why, and also, a word of warning,
their tech support is manned by imbeciles, to get any tech help you
need, you'll need to *email* them, whereupon your email should get to
the right guy, that is to say the SysAdmin in charge of actually
looking after the servers. So - it's not rosy, but please, don't go to
the US!

Let me know if my mail helped you :)

So, if I understand you correctly, you want us to support an provider even though it has crappy support ("their tech support is manned by imbeciles"), charges much more for much less, even charges for *free* MySQL... simply because they are an Indian company!?

Imagine what would happen if all US companies (and companies in non-Indian countries) think the same way. There would be no Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, TCS etc. as they all depend upon Outsourcing.

Hmm,

Interesting that iam here wants to today advocate exactly the kind of 'protectionism' for internet related services that has been practiced by our government since the time of our independence, for other industries. This 'protectionism' has produced inefficiencies that are unthinkable in a free trade environment and has hindered innovation to the extent that Indian products and services were always a second choice over foreign ones for generations of Indians. On the other hand Angshuman wants to charge headlong into what is the current politically correct attitude which requires him to bet his business (and that of his clients, who depend on his business continuity to a certain extent) on the optimistic assumption that whichever country he hosts his data, services and business fulfillment processes with, will not publicly or privately formulate a policy to 'take on' his business segment, even if it has publicly formulated a policy to take on work going to, specifically, Bangalore.

My take on this is that we must not repeat our mistake with 'protectionism', particularly for internet related services and also not risk the slippery slope of making our entire business dependant on services and resources based in another country - which can withdraw or terminate the same by a mere change in its domestic or foreign policy.

Since our government enables us to import hardware quite easily and economically and telecom companies now offer bandwidth more reliably and cheaper than ever before, we could invest in putting the rest of the pieces of the business together and truly own our businesses.

With concepts such as Saas and the cloud being accepted by businesses across the globe, the future could perhaps belong to Indian companies which own their resources, run them efficiently and sell them cheaper than others.

Niel Hirjee.

This group encourages using discretion and self-judgment towards selecting service provider.

Every entrepreneur has entire freedom to select any service provider of  any nation state
.

Member "iam here <iamherei...@gmail.com>" is informed to avoid hate rising categorization and discrimination (as mentioned in his/her mail below) when sending mail to this list. Such comments lead to war of words that wastes bandwidth of other members.

Mr. Angsuman Chakraborty,

Thank you for ongoing support to the community and certainly look forward for further support in the future. Having said so, I request you to kindly avoid recommendations that are biased towards any nation state.

Disclosure of your experiences with various vendors will certainly help other members. But statements such as

BTW: You should always go with US based providers as they provide better value for money.

generates unnecessary situations with increased probability of enraging other members.

As a platform encouraging entrepreneurship at a global scale, such a statement coming from senior member "digs pot-holes in the platform".

Kindly help building this entrepreneur-support-platform as one of the ideal community supporting entrepreneurship in Kolkata and West Bengal.

Moderator.

That was based on my experience with using several shared hosting, VPS hosting and dedicated web hosting providers from Europe and USA since 1999. I am not biased towards any nation. The recommendation is based on my experience and intended to help fellow entrepreneurs and should be taken as such. The actual value / money can be easily found out by doing a little research and that should be the key guiding factor.

Hey Angsuman,

I am with you on this as well agree with Niel Hirjee. I agree any
startup or business person would like to know the ground realities
than go with emotional sentiments. Business has none. I totally agree
with Niel that we should not promote protectionism and yes the country
does have now all the tech available to enter this space.

Also I would to ask something of Mr Moderator OCCKol. As I understand
from it starting formative days of the current flavor of OCC in
Kolkata (of which I am intimately aware & participant of), is why
freedom of idea and suggestion be bounded, as in this case Angshuman's
one. Are we not ultimately here for that - to get hand on real life
experience based suggestions , that will actually helps on the ground,
rather than theoretical suggestion?
If you may kindly explain that, it would be very helpful. I hope I did
not violate anything by this.

Regards,
Arjun
