Good afternoon, Board Members—

Thank you for your service to Orange County. I am deeply concerned about the proposal to switch from a continuation budget to a per-pupil spending model for Orange County Schools.

As a parent of two students in Orange County, it is important to me that we live in a community with strong public schools. I strongly believe that a continuation budget will help achieve that—rather than a per-pupil funding model.

Our state is already ranked poorly in per-pupil spending compared to others. With declining enrollment, shifting to a per-pupil model will only reduce the total funding available to our schools. Please do not give families more reason to leave public education.

I urge you to fully fund the continuation budgets for both CHCCS and OCS so that all of our children have access to excellent schools.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Dear Hannah Murphy,

On behalf of the Orange County Board of Commissioners thank you for sharing your concerns about the impact on our public schools of changing from a continuation budget to a per-pupil allocation approach.  The County is facing a challenging budget environment and we value public input.

Sincerely,
Jean

Orange County Board of Commissioners
