OHS Tennis Courts

Dear Commissioners,

We are writing to encourage Orange County and Orange County Schools (OCS) to work together to increase community access to the Orange High School (OHS) tennis courts and help address the growing demand for tennis court space in Orange County.

Orange County taxpayers have recently invested in resurfacing the OHS and Fairview tennis courts and adding new courts at Fairview. We appreciate these investments and believe these facilities should be accessible to the residents who helped fund them whenever they are not being used for school activities. Student use and school programming should, of course, remain the priority.

Tennis participation continues to grow throughout Orange County, but public court availability remains limited. As a result, many residents regularly travel to neighboring communities to find courts for recreational play, league matches, and other tennis activities.
Expanding access to existing taxpayer-funded facilities would help maximize the community’s investment while supporting healthy recreation opportunities for residents of all ages. We respectfully ask Orange County and OCS to explore opportunities to make additional court time available to the public during non-school hours.

The Orange Tennis Club (OTC), a local nonprofit organization, supports efforts to increase court access for the broader community and is willing to assist in any way that may be helpful as these opportunities are considered.

On behalf of the Orange County Board of Commissioners (BOCC), thank you for sharing your viewpoints about access to Orange County School (OCS) tennis courts.

 

As you know, this is a matter for the OCS Board of Education.  That Board determines the use of school facilities with the OCS Superintendent. The BOCC has shared community concerns about tennis court access with OCS in the past.
