Dear Orange County Board of County Commissioners,

I am writing as a grateful and concerned user of the Orange County Public Library. I understand that the County faces difficult budget decisions and that many worthy programs compete for limited resources. However, I urge you to reconsider the proposed reductions to the library budget.

The library is one of the most valuable public services our county provides. Some of my fondest memories growing up involve the library, especially our children’s librarian, Mrs. Teal. I used to love to listen to her read stories, and I remember thinking that she must be the smartest person in the world surrounded by all those books because she seemed to know everything that was in every one of them. Now, of course the library has evolved into so much more than just story time. Not only books, but they provide access to technology, job assistance, educational programs, and safe spaces that benefit every resident of Orange County. These essential services and resources strengthen our community and make us a better place to live, work, and thrive.

As a special educator with Orange County Schools and as a parent, what concerns me most is that these proposed cuts would have a direct impact on public access. Reduced staffing means fewer open days, fewer programs for children and families, fewer outreach opportunities, and less support for patrons who rely on library staff for assistance. A smaller collection means fewer opportunities for reading, learning, and discovery, things essential to the growth and development of all students, but especially those with special needs. Libraries help bridge gaps that schools cannot address alone, particularly during summers and outside school hours. Reducing programs and access would have a real impact on students and families in our community.

I’m sure that by now others have shared statistics with you-the record number of times the library was used last year and the relatively low cost per resident-so I will simply point out that the usage stats prove how much our county values and relies on our libraries. Reducing hours and services can create a cycle of lower usage leading to additional cuts. Our community cannot afford to begin this slippery slope, especially during these uncertain economic times when free internet access, job search assistance, and welcoming spaces for those who may have nowhere else to go are essential. Reducing access risks harming the very residents who depend on them the most.

I respectfully ask you to preserve library funding and protect the services that so many Orange County residents depend upon. Thank you for your service to our community and for considering the voices of those who use and value our public library.

Sincerely,
Christine Bouck

The Orange County Board of Commissioners (BOCC) will receive and consider your feedback as part of the ongoing budget process. Public input is an important part of these discussions, and your engagement is appreciated.

The scheduled public hearings and information sessions have concluded, however there is a Budget Work Session on June 4 where commissioners will discuss and vote on amendments to the County Manager’s Recommended Budget.
