Orange County Board of Commissioners choose Hamilton, Fowler as Chair, Vice Chair for 2026

Commissioner Jean Hamilton was unanimously chosen to serve as chair for the Orange County Board of Commissioners (BOCC) for 2026 at its Dec. 1 organizational meeting. Hamilton, who is in her second term on the board representing District 1, had served as vice chair for the previous year.

Before being elected to the Board of Commissioners in 2020, Hamilton was elected to serve on the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education from 2005-2009 and was appointed in 2010-2011 and 2019.

Commissioner Amy Fowler was chosen to serve as vice chair by a unanimous vote. Fowler, an at-large representative, was elected to serve on the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education from 2017-2020 and has been a member of the Orange County BOCC since being elected in 2020.

“I am honored to serve as chair and grateful for the trust my fellow commissioners have in me to lead the board for the next year,” Hamilton said. “Orange County is facing important opportunities and challenges, and I look forward to working collaboratively with our board, staff, and community to continue building a strong and equitable future for all residents.”

State law requires each board of commissioners to meet on the first Monday in December to choose its leadership for the upcoming year.

Commissioner Marilyn Carter was chosen to serve as the board’s voting delegate for the National Association of Counties (NACo). Commissioner Phyllis Portie-Ascott was chosen as the county’s voting delegate for the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners (NCACC). Orange County is a dues-paying member of both organizations.
