New Data Center Vote (Tuesday 21/04)

Hello to everyone on Orange County's Board of County Commissioners - 

I know you have an important vote tonight to decide whether to have a moratorium on the construction of new data centers in Orange County. I'm writing to urge you to vote in favor of a moratorium that lasts as long as possible. I know these data centers tend to pass their operating costs on to their surrounding communities, especially their energy consumption. I'm in my late thirties and finally finding my feet after a stressful few years. My spouse is immigrating to the US and we're moving into our first flat soon. Money is already tight for us, we can't afford the electricity bill hike that a data center would incur. I'm also concerned about the general environmental impact - these things use hundreds of thousands of gallons of water in a day and, with climate change, North Carolina is already struggling with intensifying heat waves and increased drought risk.

On behalf of the Orange County Board of Commissioners thank you for sharing your viewpoints on data centers.  We had a public hearing on a one-year moratorium on large-scale data centers at our April 21, 2026 business meeting and the Board voted unanimously for the moratorium.
