DEPUTIES ARREST MAN IN GUILFORD COUNTY AFTER ASSISTING WITH A HIT AND RUN CRASH IN HILLSBOROUGH
Hillsborough, NC (March 2, 2026) — After an extensive pursuit, deputies with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Hampton, Virginia man driving a U-Haul box truck early this morning. They charged Timothy Leroy Durham, 58, with felony flee to elude, driving while impaired, simple possession of a schedule VI drug, and multiple traffic offenses after stop sticks successfully disabled the truck on the western edge of Greensboro.
Telecommunicators dispatched deputies at 10:20 PM to assist the Hillsborough Police Department following a hit and run. Deputies caught up to the U-Haul on I-40 near Exit 261, but the driver failed to heed the blue lights and sirens. As the truck headed west, a trooper with the Highway Patrol joined the pursuit. The Alamance County Sheriff’s Office deployed stop sticks, puncturing the front passenger tire of the U-Haul.
Despite the truck’s flat tire, Durham continued to drive erratically with his hazard lights on, at one point appearing purposefully to attempt to sideswipe a trooper. Multiple agencies deployed stop sticks before Guilford County deputies used them successfully to cause the front and rear driver’s side tires to come off. The U-Haul then slowly came to a stop near Hwy 29 and Guilford College Road on the west side of Greensboro.
Deputies immediately took Durham into custody. Following a positive canine alert, deputies conducted a probable cause search of the U-Haul and located marijuana cigarettes and 3.5 additional grams in Durham’s shirt pocket. Deputies also located a hatchet, a black mask, a camo mask, pliers, gloves, and 17 rounds of rifle ammunition in the vehicle.
A representative from U-Haul authorized a private company to tow the truck to an unknown location. Deputies transported Durham to the magistrate in Orange County, who remanded him to the custody of the Detention Center under a $50,000 secure bond and scheduled his first court appearance for 2:00 PM today. The Hillsborough Police Department may seek charges for the hit and run, while the Highway Patrol weighs additional counts for attempting to veer into the trooper.
