Dear Board Members,

My name is Ben Murphy, and Im a parent of two children in Orange County. I’m writing to express my concern about the proposed switch from a continuation budget to a per-pupil model for spending in OCS.

We must fight to support and sustain our public schools, and I believe that a continuation model is the best path for providing a strong educational environment. Particularly with how low NC ranks in per-pupil funding and issues of declining enrollment since COVID, I fear that changing the funding model will result in significant financial losses for our schools. This fallout will only turn more parents away from public schools, which will increase enrollment deficits.

For these reasons, I request that you fully fund the continuation budgets for both CHCCS and OCS so that students can have the educational experience they deserve.

Thank you for your time and consideration, and also for your service to the county.

Ben Murphy, Orange County resident & parent

Dear Ben Murphy,

On behalf of the Orange County Board of Commissioners thank you for sharing your concerns about the impact on our public schools of changing from a continuation budget to a per-pupil allocation approach.  The County is facing a challenging budget environment and we value public input.

Sincerely,
Jean
