Dear sir or madam:

As I'm sure you're aware, it has now been over two weeks since the salvage shed at the Eubanks Road convenience center closed without notice or explanation.

As an Orange County taxpayer and voter, I find both this extended closure and this lack of transparency unacceptable. The amount of items which the salvage sheds diverts from the waste stream is tremendous.

Therefore I believe it would be in everyone's best interest if both an explanation of the reason for the closure and a date on which the salvage shed will re-open is provided on the Solid Waste Management homepage as soon as possible and without further delay.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.

Hello Random Task,

The salvage shed closed because of an incident occurring two weeks ago.  I understand how popular the shed is with our community, however, the safety of the OC staff and customers using the facility are my top priorities.  However, I am happy to share that the investigation was completed late last week, and staff are working on an announcement notifying the public when the shed will reopen. The announcement will be shared via the usual outlets: website, our social media accounts, and emailed to everyone that is registered with the department.

Please let me know if you have any more questions.

Sincerely,

Robert Williams

Hello Random Task,

It was reported that a customer appeared to have brandished some sort of weapon( appeared to be a small handgun)  at another customer.  The incident was witnessed by a OC employee as well as recorded via security camera. After reviewing the footage and speaking with staff, I made the call to close the facility because the customer involved frequently visits the facility.

As far as the traffic pattern, the northern entrance will remain closed. Staff reported several near misses and they were unable to monitor those that linger in and around the shed. Actually, the traffic follow has reduced the near misses as well as helped to reduce those violating the shed’s usage policy.

Sincerely,

Subject: [EXTERNAL MAIL!] Re: [EXTERNAL MAIL!] Status of Eubanks Road Salvage Shed

Dear Mr. Williams:

Thank you for the update.

You mentioned an incident which affected someone's safety. That is alarming.

In search of more details, I learned from the Orange County Sheriff's Department that on 5/10/2024 there was a "suspicious condition" and "I [sheriff's department employee] spoke with a subject over the phone [presumably to a Solid Waste employee] in regards to a suspicious condition that occurred."

A suspicious condition would seem to be neither a "crime" worthy of closing such a popular community resource, nor anything affecting safety. Can you provide additional details? Either to me directly or ideally via the usual outlets you mentioned?

While on that subject, when it reopens, will the vehicular access to the salvage shed be restored to its original traffic flow? The recent practice of blocking the northern parking entrance to require all vehicles to circle through the entire solid waste site in order to reach the southern parking entrance seems both unnecessary and creates an unsafe vehicular flow.

Thank you again for your attention to this matter.
