Commissioners,
Thank you for your important service to Orange County.
Today, I learned that several citizens spoke at your most recent meeting on the topic of Orange County tax assessments. Some of those speakers alleged that Tax Administration appraisers have "... pulled property values out of thin air." One speaker reported a series of events from a recent tax appeal hearing ... that didn't happen.
It's clear to me that all of you are familiar enough with Orange County Tax Administration to be confident that, while many important issues related to Tax Administration certainly need to be addressed, no appraiser has entered a property value randomly, as some of last week's speakers would have you believe.
The County has engaged a consultant to pursue an independent review of the Orange County tax assessment process. I'm confident that the consultant's report will lay out a path toward a more efficient, accurate and equitable process for establishing property tax values, along with guidance about resources required to implement any recommended changes. Meantime, irresponsible allegations, like those that came up in last week's meeting, do not advance the cause of best practices in Tax Administration and I hope we won't see a repeat of last week's incident.
Though I serve on the Orange County Board of Equalization and Review, the opinions expressed above are entirely my own and do not necessarily represent the opinions of fellow Board members or alternates.
