As a Chapel Hill resident paying among the highest real estate taxes in the country and using few services provided by the county, I object strongly to the proposed reduction of the county's financial support to the Chapel Hill library whose services are available to all county residents as well as members of the UNC-CH community.  The library is a first class institution and through your actions its services will be at a minimum significantly curtailed.

I urge you to continue to provide funding to the Library which is an important service for me as an educated retiree.

Sincerely

The library is an incredible public resource for all Orange County residents and support from the county needs to be continued.

Dear Orange County Commissioners,

As a resident of Chapel Hill, I am writing to express my concern about the proposed phase-out of funding for Chapel Hill Public Library and strongly urge you to vote to continue to fund the library. I believe the library is an essential resource in our community, for all residents of Orange County. This library has been a lifesaver for my daughter and our family as she was growing up. We have benefited from its collection, facilities, and programs. It is one of the most welcoming places in Chapel Hill for children and adults alike, providing the residents with opportunities to grow and learn in a world where reading and access to verifiable knowledge are more critical than ever. I cannot imagine the loss to the community if the library were to lose most of its funding.

The proposed funding reduction of $621,323 (half during fiscal year 2027 and the remaining half at the beginning of fiscal year 2028) is 72% of the library’s total operating budget. This reduction would have a significant impact on library services, including hours, programs, and access to resources, especially for the 14,813 county residents who, if funding were lost, would have to either pay for an account at Chapel Hill Public Library or lose access. I respectfully ask that you reconsider this proposal and continue funding Chapel Hill Public Library. Investing in the world-class Chapel Hill Public Library is an investment in education, economic opportunity, and the well-being of everyone in our county.

Thank you for your time and for your service to our community.

Sincerely,

Hello,

I am a resident of Chapel Hill. My kids, my wife, and I frequently go to both the Carrboro and Chapel Hill libraries. I strongly urge you to continue funding the Chapel Hill library. Access to well-funded, well-resourced libraries should be an inalienable right for all residents of our wonderful county. I believe strongly that there are fewer more positive uses of county funding than investing in free access to literature and educational resources. Removing funding and limiting the resources and effectiveness of the Chapel Hill library would be a disservice to Orange County residents.

I hope that you will consider the benefits that the library provides to the community and respectfully ask that you reconsider this proposal and continue funding the library.

Thanks for your time and consideration.

Best,
Walker Fuller

Dear Orange County Commissioner,

I am a resident of Chapel Hill and am writing to express extreme concern of the discussion of phase out funding for the only good library in Orange County (Chapel Hill Public Library). This is the only library that is hugely used in our area, it has great parking for the elderly/handicapped (as opposed to our Orange County options), It has state of the art books and equipement, is centrally located and walking distance to some areas, and is an icon of our town. The newer Orange County Branch is a horrible design - I am not even able to return books without a cumbersome walk across a busy road, or through a parking garage.

I ask that you open up discussion to the public, so that we can find alternatives to this funding issue, and find a workable solution that serves the public.

Thank you,
Elizabeth Pratson

Hello,

Please do not remove funds in the Orange County budget from the CH library.  It is one of the MOST used libraries in the COUNTRY!  Claiming that we now have the Carrboro library makes no sense at all.  The parking is terrible and the number of books available is way too low for all of the southern  county residents to access.  We in the town pay County taxes also and expect the same services that we have had.  We have this beautiful, relatively new building in the center of the county that should be supported by county government.  To remove funds from this important organization will be detrimental to the county and its residents.  Please refer to the attached document, Inequity of Proposed Funding Cut, for more reasons that this is not a good policy.  Thank you.

Dear Orange County Commissioners,

I am writing to ask you to reconsider your proposed funding cut to the Chapel Hill Library.

This library is a very valuable community and county resource. Many people use it every day, mothers with children, high school and college students, and adults of all ages. It is also a place of refuge sometimes, for people who need to get out of the heat or people without housing. It provides study spaces and play spaces for children.

I use the library several times a week. Frequently there is no parking space and I have to come back later or just leave books in the bins.

We need our library for education, entertainment, and community!

Sincerely,

Victoria Wike

I am a senior citizen living on a fixed income.  I love to read, but can't afford to buy a lot of books.   I visit the library almost every week.  Recently I attended a lively, well-attended poetry reading at the Chapel Hill Library.  People of all ages read their poems; the youngest was a shy 8-year-old girl.  Such gatherings help us, particularly our young folk, find our unique voices, practice active listening, and develop both intellectual and emotional intelligence.  Another friend of mine took great pleasure from a course of philosophy offered through the library.   We need to value and sustain resources that nurture even the poorest among us, strengthens community, and helps us understand and navigate our increasingly more complex world.

Please don’t eliminate funding from the Chapel Hill library. It is a meaningful and important resource for our county.

I think you should close the new Orange County library in Carrboro if funding is a concern and use the space for something else. It can’t offer the amount of services and resources that the CH library does.

This meeting, along with the BOCC’s regular business meetings, provide opportunities for residents to learn more about the county’s budget priorities and decision-making process.

Thank you again for taking the time to participate in the process.

Please maintain the library funding in Chapel Hill.  It is used and loved by so many people from the county!! We pay taxes for these types of services.  Great places like the library are one of the reasons people choose to live in Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Hillsborough in the first place.
