Hello, I saw that the Board recently discussed recreational options for this piece of land. I want to extend the possibility of soccer to include more sports, including baseball and softball.

The local community needs to coordinate on a softball/baseball field complex (4+ fields with spectator amenities, restroom facilities, concession area, playground) to capitalize on the explosion of youth ball. All local teams are traveling to the Triad or eastern Triangle instead of being able to host tournaments here in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro/Hillsborough/Pittsboro area. We could become a site for these sponsored tournaments and be a popular destination, bringing hotel/restaurant/local business support.

Rocky Mount, Clayton, Wake Forest, Dunn, and even Clemmons are communities who have prioritized building park and ball field spaces to accommodate these activities and spectator amenities. Our local area should be able to coordinate together to capitalize on this interest and growth instead of losing the benefits to other Triangle and Triad communities.

Thank you very much.

Best regards,
Stephanie Schmitt

Dear Ms. Schmitt,

On behalf of the BOCC, thank you for sharing your perspective on recreational needs in Orange County and how the Millhouse Road property could be used. This issue was on a work session and will likely return to the BOCC next year for further consideration.

Sincerely,

Jean Hamilton, Chair
Orange County Commissioner
