Good Morning Commissioners,

Because of our longtime partnership with Orange County, I am personally reaching out to share the bittersweet news that I will be retiring later this year as CEO.  It has been a privilege to work at CASA for the past 20 years, with the last three as CEO.  I am extremely proud of all that we have accomplished to help people with the least resources, and often the highest needs, find stability in their own affordable homes.

We began Succession Planning with CASA’s Board of Directors in 2017, and we have been positioning ourselves for this transition. Some of the continuity that you can expect as a partner includes:

  • Following the onboarding of a new CEO (projected in the fall), I will remain on staff as a part-time Senior Advisor for fundraising and project development, specifically focused on our new developments:  King’s Ridge in Raleigh, Merritt Mill and Homestead Rd. in Orange County, and Bryan Place in Durham.
  • Jess Brandes, Senior Director of Real Estate Development, has been named Transitional COO to ensure a smooth leadership transition. Jess will retain leadership of housing development and critical community partnerships, while also maximizing her 13 years as a CASA leader to focus on ways to strengthen our internal capacities to match our expanding portfolio.
  • A Transition Committee comprised of Board and staff members will be formed this spring and will work in partnership with Armstrong McGuire to conduct a CEO search.
  • CASA expects to begin recruiting our next CEO this summer.
  • CASA will add another real estate developer to our team in the next few months.

Thank you for supporting CASA and me in this wonderful journey. If you have any questions about the short or long term, please ask.  All of us at CASA are committed to a smooth transition that remains wholly focused on our mission, strategic goals, and housing stability for our residents.

Mary Jean
