Board of Orange County Commissioners:
I am fortunate to be able to utilize three hours of my accrued Annual Leave to attend this afternoon’s lecture from Dr. Jennifer Doudna. She and another woman received the Nobel prize in Chemistry in 2020 and traveled to Chapel Hill from California.
Fingers-crossed, Dr. Mary-Dell Chilton may appear at the lecture and meet-and-greet.
Orange County resident Dr. Mary-Dell Chilton was awarded a National Medal for Technology and Innovation from President Biden in the White House in November 2023. Perhaps the newest OC DEI-related employee will consider writing a resolution from the Board to also honor Dr. Mary-Dell Chilton. (See below.)
If you have the time, then I hope to see you this afternoon.
Yours truly,
William Madden
Deputy Register of Deeds

Dr. Fairbanks:
Maybe next year Orange County can recognize one of the most accomplished women scientists alive in the world, Dr. Mary-Dell Chilton of Carrboro.

Hi Bill, thanks so much for your suggestion. What the DEI Advisory Council is starting with is one Lunch and Learn per month (if possible) and attempting to have those L&Ls to coincide with different things are being celebrated each month in the areas of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. If we get good participation, that could grow to more in the future.
Dr. Chilton is VERY impressive and accomplished. I looked up more than what you provided below. I think you are right. In OC, where farming is likely in all of our current or historical families, people would love to hear from her.
I also looked at the community center and a you tube video about Dr. Sancar’s contributions as well.
We are open to all suggestions. We’re just beginning. We will definitely keep Dr. Chilton and Dr. Aziz Sancar (& spouse) in mind for future L&Ls. Thanks again
Thank you!

I suggest asking Dr. Mary-Dell Chilton to speak, as the longtime Orange County resident may just be the most successful woman Orange County folks may ever meet.
In addition to being the first person to document the transfer of genes across biological families (from animal to plant) and to use that knowledge to significantly feed what is now a 7.8 billion world population; she and her late husband did a fine job raising their two children to become contributors to Society. Both are former attorneys; one is a children’s book author and the other the former Mayor of Carrboro and current Register of Deeds!
So far, her highest award recognition is the 2013 World Food Prize.
And she’s a loving grandmother of two UNC-Chapel Hill undergrads.

PS Longtime Chapel Hill resident and Nobel laureate Dr. Aziz Sancar and his wife recently opened the Sancar Turkish Cultural and Community Center (SCCC) at 1609 East Franklin Street. Why not feature the couple and the SCCC? See sancar.org

Board:
Here’s another Orange County woman y’all ought to celebrate: Cindy Parlow Cone.
Two days ago I was chatting with Cindy inside Weaver Street Market (Carrboro). She looked amazingly calm for being the president of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) about to host the World Cup. I chose not to ask her what she will do when she has to meet DJT at the World Cup final July 19, 2026.
