Dear Commissioners:

I am writing to urge you not to reduce the funding for the Public Library. The services it offers to the community would be severely compromised by reduced hours, fewer staff, and/or cuts in the operating budget.  I know the Board has difficult decisions to make. But the library is such an important community resource.

I am a senior citizen and go to the library at least once a week....not just to check out books but to attend community meetings, get technical assistance, and look at printed material (newspapers and magazines) I would otherwise not have access too.

In a very real sense the library is the community's living room. The fact that it is open seven days a week makes it available to a much wider constituency than would otherwise be the case.  When I go to the library I see students studying together, families reading together, activities for kids and adults. It is always being used by a wonderful cross section of our neighbors. It is too valuable a resource to sacrifice in the attempt to reduce costs.

Thank you.

Warmly,

Susan Arshack

Hello Susan,

Thank you for sharing your perspectives regarding the county budget and our libraries.

The Orange County Board of Commissioners (BOCC) will receive and consider your feedback as part of the ongoing budget process. Public input is an important part of these discussions, and your engagement is appreciated.

The scheduled public hearings and information sessions have concluded, however there is a Budget Work Session on June 4 where commissioners will discuss and vote on amendments to the County Manager’s Recommended Budget.

Thank you again for taking the time to participate in the process.
