Good afternoon,
I have lived in Orange County since September 2020. For several years, OC Waste Services refused to collect recycling on my road, Fern Creek Lane in Chapel Hill, until I threatened to contact your office.
We now have recycling collection. However, each recycling day, they fail to collect our recycling until I file a complaint. Every time. They are essentially making 3 tax paying county households beg for service every two weeks.
They also refuse to collect broken down cardboard boxes carefully piled at the end of our driveways. They claim they only collect bins. That is not true for other Orange County residents. When I challenged them on this point, they claimed they could only use a small truck on our road and that this prevented the collection of cardboard. Not only does this not make sense, it is also not true. Our road can and does accommodate large trucks. We have a large cul de sac at the end of the road that allows large 52’ tractor trailers to turn around. Also, I’ve seen them bring their large trucks down our road frequently when it suits them.
If we are being deprived of basic services, I am sure other residents are as well. Many of us recently received a significant increase in property taxes, which makes the lack of basic services all the more frustrating.
Attempts to work directly with Orange County waste services directly for over a year has not led to a resolution of these issues.
I would appreciate assistance from your office.
Best regards,
Erin Moran
