Hello!
I live in Orange County and am concerned about what I've been hearing about how the BOCC may change the school funding model. Our children deserve fully funded schools. Especially with the chaos surrounding school funding from the federal and state governments, the county must remain steadfast and committed to our schools.
A per-pupil funding model doesn't make sense. A school district doesn't automatically become cheaper to run just because it has 20 fewer students this school year than last year. So many of the costs are fixed: teachers still receive their fixed salaries whether they teach 20 or 25 students, custodians still need to be paid to clean the buildings, and the buildings cost the same to heat and cool.
A per-pupil funding model would create enormous uncertainty from year to year and make strategic planning difficult. We need to provide steady funding based on actual operating needs, not create even more instability in our schools. Please reject the per-pupil funding model--it would be a disaster for our schools.
Best,
