Dear Chair and Members of the Board of County Commissioners,

I am an Orange County resident, and I am asking you to keep the Orange County Public Library's operating budget whole by rejecting the proposed $200,000 reduction, Amendment OP-B08, at your June 4 budget meeting.

I understand you are weighing many worthy needs with limited resources, and I respect how difficult that is. My concern is what a budget line cannot show. The bulk of this reduction would fall on temporary staffing, the flexible hours that keep both branches open on their full schedules and make programs and outreach possible. Take those hours away, and permanent staff are pulled into core duties just to keep the doors open and books on the shelves, leaving little room for anything more. On top of the roughly $133,759 already reduced in the recommended budget, that is about $333,759 in combined reductions, and library leadership has said the likely result is two fewer open days each week at both the Hillsborough and Carrboro branches, fewer programs, and a smaller collection.

That is why a cut that looks modest on paper is felt at the front door and on the shelves.

When times get tight, library use goes up, not down, and a closed door does the most damage to the people who can least work around it. The Orange County Public Library was used more than 632,000 times last year, a ten-year high, at a cost of about $35.94 per resident, roughly ten cents a day. It is one of the county's most-used and most cost-effective services, and one of the very few that is open to every resident, of any age, income, or background.

Say no to cutting public library funding.

Please reject the additional $200,000 reduction and protect the Orange County Public Library's hours, programs, and collection. Thank you for your service to Orange County and for considering this.

Sincerely,
Russell Everett

The Orange County Public Library is a vital "public square" where children, seniors, and newcomers freely connect and access resources. Slashing its funding actively undermines our community. I urge you to protect library budget lines to ensure Orange County remains a thriving, welcoming place for everyone.

My family and I love the library! My daughter loves picking out new books to take home and I love that she is learning to borrow books instead of buying things new. We both enjoy the kids programming, which is not only fun for kids but creates a nice community among parents as well. And I love being able to read e-books from the library while I am breastfeeding or helping my baby go to sleep. We have also taken advantage of the printing and notary services at the library. We are so grateful for all that the library provides for our community!

I use the library several times each week. I use the resources as well as use the study rooms to help high school students with algebra and calculus classes. I am a retired teacher and I am not a paid tutor. With out access to the library it would be difficult to work with these students. Please keep the libraries open each day of the week.

That is why a cut that looks modest on paper is felt at the front door and on the shelves. As an avid reader and active member of multiple book clubs, I depend on the library to check out the books for each club each month. Libraries provide access to books, computers, and programming to those who otherwise wouldn't have access. It is a privilege to own your own books and computers. It is also a privilege to further one's education. Libraries are vital to making education accessible through diverse programming, large book collections, and making computers available to anyone who needs one.

Dear Chair and Members of the Board of County Commissioners,

I am writing in strong opposition to Amendment OP-B08 which proposes further funding cuts of 200k to the Orange County Public Library.  I am an Orange County resident and library professional at Duke University Libraries. I know the vital role that libraries play in our community and I am proud of the work that OCPL does each day.  These further cuts would like cause closures which would have a significant negative impact on Hillsborough and Orange County residents.

The Orange County Public Library was used more than 632,000 times last year, a ten-year high, at a cost of about $35.94 per resident, roughly ten cents a day. It is one of the county's most-used and most cost-effective services, and one of the very few that is open to every resident, of any age, income, or background.

As retired person the library is a vital resource for me. Please do not reduce the financial resources the library has available to provide services for the citizens of the county.

Please reject the additional $200,000 reduction and protect the Orange County Public Library's hours, programs, and collection. Thank you for your service to Orange County and for considering this.

Sincerely,

Dear Commissioners,

I've written to you to urge against more cuts to OCAC funding. Now, with equal, if not more urgency, I am writing to ask you not to cut funding for our public library. Our public library is truly the only place I go in this town where *everyone* has equal access to its resources. Anyone can borrow a book, ask for help from the librarians, sit in peace, and teach themselves whatever they want or need to learn.  I deeply value this equality of access in a town that is becoming increasingly separated by class and wealth.  As such, our public library is probably the most important source we have in Hillsborough for building community understanding, and for reinforcing town participation and citizenship. Please spare the Hillsborough library from funding cuts.

Sincerely,
Tori Reynolds

Please do not reduce the library budget! I use the library regularly - the cost of books has increased so much that I can't afford to buy all the books I want to read and my town's library has been a life saver for me. The library is one of the last third spaces we have, and is incredibly important to the community.

The Orange County Public Library was used more than 632,000 times last year, a ten-year high, at a cost of about $35.94 per resident, roughly ten cents a day. It is one of the county's most-used and most cost-effective services, and one of the very few that is open to every resident, of any age, income, or background.

I am so grateful to the library for providing so many amazing books for my students, my family, and myself. Our home and school community are better because of their resources.

Please reject the additional $200,000 reduction and protect the Orange County Public Library's hours, programs, and collection. Thank you for your service to Orange County and for considering this.

Sincerely,
Jennifer Chottiner
Hillsborough

Dear Chair and Members of the Board of County Commissioners, I am an Orange County resident, and I am asking you to keep the Orange County Public Library's operating budget whole by rejecting the proposed $200,000 reduction, Amendment OP-B08, at your June 4 budget meeting. We would need a major pillar of our community especially ones supporting the growth of kids to not be made less effective. I hope areas other than knowledge centers are explored to balance the budget. Please reject the additional $200,000 reduction and protect the Orange County Public Library's hours, programs, and collection. Thank you for your service to Orange County and for considering this. Sincerely, Ravi Vasireddy Hillsborough

Why are services being cut when growth is exploding and so are taxes? What are you doing with our money?

Please reject the additional $200,000 reduction and protect the Orange County Public Library's hours, programs, and collection. Thank you for your service to Orange County and for considering this.

Sincerely,
Danielle Dodder

So, though I’m not close enough to check out books here, it’s worth the trip each month to go to friends of the library book sales. The supplies they sell help stock my little free library.

It’s a lovely library and the community needs it. Please don’t take funds from it.

Please reject the additional $200,000 reduction and protect the Orange County Public Library's hours, programs, and collection. Thank you for your service to Orange County and for considering this.

Please do not reduce the library budget! My family uses the library regularly. The cost of books has increased significantly and we cannot afford to buy the books we’re interested in or support local authors, the library has been a mainstay for our family.

Our local libraries (OCPL and CHPL) are town treasures and I believe strongly that their budgets should not be reduced; the negative ripple effects that this would have on the community would be long-lasting, deep, and difficult to rebound from. In today's society, these libraries are places of solace, education, community, and valuable resources, and reducing their budgets would needlessly dim these valuable and essential bright lights in our town.

The library is too important for a or any town. So much has been taken away from us, ordinary people recently , including some of our rights that we've held for so many years. I have a right to insist that our library remain open and fully able to serve our community. It has no voice, however, this community and I have a voice , and I insist as i'm sure are beautiful community and hillsborough want to keep the library open. Dear Chair and Members of the Board of County Commissioners,

I live in Hillsborough, and I am asking you to please keep the Orange County Public Library's operating budget whole by rejecting the proposed $200,000 reduction, Amendment OP-B08, at your June 4 budget meeting.

I understand that the budget process is a difficult one, and that there are many worthy needs and limited resources. But I ask that you consider the value that the Orange County Library in Hillsborough has brought to the lives of so many residents, especially in these troubled and tight times.

Our library is a community resource that is open to everyone, regardless of income, race, neighborhood, gender… every single person in the county is welcome. And our library maintains and continues to expand programming meant to support all sorts of groups and bring people together. How many organizations or establishments here can say that? It is a rare and valuable thing, and I ask that you continue to support it fully.

I am an avid reader but haven’t got the money to buy new books, or much interest in buying new books from an ecological standpoint. I also take my little grandchildren to our library, where they have developed a wonderful love of reading that I hope will continue despite the daily bombardment with technology and distractions.

Please reject the additional $200,000 reduction and protect the Orange County Public Library's hours, programs, and collection. Thank you for your time and service to Orange County.

Sincerely,

Dear Chair and Members of the Board of County Commissioners,

I am writing in strong opposition to Amendment OP-B08 which proposes further funding cuts of 200k to the Orange County Public Library.  I am an Orange County resident and library professional at Duke University Libraries. I know the vital role that libraries play in our community and I am proud of the work that OCPL does each day.  These further cuts would like cause closures which would have a significant negative impact on Hillsborough and Orange County residents.

Please reject the additional $200,000 reduction and protect the Orange County Public Library's hours, programs, and collection. Thank you for your service to Orange County and for considering this.

Orange County public library serves not only as a resource for reading but also in providing a place to gather for learning and socializing. Reducing available books or the staff who make accessing library resources possible is detrimental

Please reject the additional $200,000 reduction and protect the Orange County Public Library's hours, programs, and collection. Thank you for your service to Orange County and for considering this.

Sincerely,
Christina Burke

Dear Chair and Members of the Board of County Commissioners,

Please reject the additional $200,000 reduction and protect the Orange County Public Library's hours, programs, and collection. Thank you for your service to Orange County and for considering this.

Please reject the additional $200,000 reduction and protect the Orange County Public Library's hours, programs, and collection. Thank you for your service to Orange County and for considering this.

Sincerely,

Courtney A. Meyer

The library is very important to my entire family.

Please reject the additional $200,000 reduction and protect the Orange County Public Library's hours, programs, and collection. Thank you for your service to Orange County and for considering this.

Sincerely,

Joseph Accordino
Hillsborough

Our local libraries (OCPL and CHPL) are town treasures and I believe strongly that their budgets should not be reduced; the negative ripple effects that this would have on the community would be long-lasting, deep, and difficult to rebound from. In today's society, these libraries are places of solace, education, community, and valuable resources, and reducing their budgets would needlessly dim these valuable and essential bright lights in our town.

Please reject the additional $200,000 reduction and protect the Orange County Public Library's hours, programs, and collection. Thank you for your service to Orange County and for considering this.

It is beloved our community.  Ultimately, it is paramount that we sustain our and support local library.

I am an Orange County resident, and I am asking you to keep the Orange County Public Library's operating budget whole by rejecting the proposed $200,000 reduction.

Our library is one of our strongest resources for youth and adults alike. The library is an important 3rd space (the only in hillsborough). We need it to be open so that there is space for people to exist without spending money. We all deserve space to read, grow, and learn.
I urge you to consider what we all lose when you cut funding.

Please reject the additional $200,000 reduction and protect the Orange County Public Library's hours, programs, and collection. Thank you for your service to Orange County and for considering this.

Sincerely,

The Orange County Public Library was used more than 632,000 times last year, a ten-year high, at a cost of about $35.94 per resident, roughly ten cents a day. It is one of the county's most-used and most cost-effective services, and one of the very few that is open to every resident, of any age, income, or background.

Please keep the library funded. A strong library is crucial to a vibrant and healthy community.

Please reject the additional $200,000 reduction and protect the Orange County Public Library's hours, programs, and collection. Thank you for your service to Orange County and for considering this.

Sincerely,
Alec
