MAN FACES MULTIPLE CHARGES IN CONNECTION WITH SATURDAY CRIMES
Hillsborough, NC (June 25, 2024) – Saturday evening, June 22, deputies with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office arrested James Pickens Jr., 49, and charged him in connection with a series of break-ins on Boogaboo Trail and River Run Road. Today, investigators arrested Pickens on additional charges related to a fire that night at 1515 Coleman Loop Road.
Pickens, of Hillsborough, originally faced two counts of felony breaking and entering, two counts of felony larceny after breaking and entering, and one count each of going armed to the terror of the people, damage to property, misdemeanor breaking and entering, and resisting a public officer. These charges all stemmed from break-ins on and near Boogaboo Trail Saturday evening. Pickens eventually made bond on those charges and left the detention center Monday evening.
After locating evidence connecting Pickens to the fire on Coleman Loop Road, investigators charged him today with breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, and the burning of a commercial structure. The fire affected several businesses occupying that complex. Many people know it as the Major Business Systems building, which is the name of the company that formerly occupied the space.
Following his arrest this afternoon, Pickens again entered the custody of the detention center staff in accordance with the Pre-Trial Integrity Act. This act provides that defendants charged with new offenses while on pretrial release for other crimes will be held without bond for up to 48 hours. His next court date is June 26 at 2:00 PM.
