Dear OCAW-MD Sisters & Friends,

Closing out our February, please enjoy a summary and some photos of our recent activities:

I. Members of the OCAW-Maryland Chapter Board attended a bi-coastal community meeting/video conference on February 8, 2011 kicking off the 1882 Project at the law office of Covington & Burling.  The evening’s presentation was educational on the history of the Chinese Exclusion Acts and the impact on the Chinese in America, as well as inspirational to those present to take actions to support the resolutions.

The 1882 Project seeks grassroots and congressional support for resolutions addressing the Chinese Exclusion Laws. Attached is a summary of the 1882 Project. We encourage our members and friends to visit the 1882 Project website at http://www.1882Project.org and sign up to support this cause.

II.
Patricia Fenn's write-up (to be shared in the next OCAW E-Newsletter) of the February 18th visit of Amy Chua (author of Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother) at Politics & Prose.

III. We had a fabulous time on our 3-legged field trip today! First, we viewed the orchid paintings with poetry and Chinese calligraphy inspired by orchids at the Sackler Gallery. There were three ceramic bowls used for holding orchid blossoms and some scholar stones on display too. We learned about the interesting symbolism of the orchid ("lan") and mushroom ("lingzhi") representing virtue and integrity of a "moral gentleman." (Note: this exhibit closes on July 17, 2011.) While we were there, we also explored the limestone Buddhist cave sculptures and carvings. (Note: this exhibit closes on July 31, 2011.)

Then it was off across the street to the live orchid exhibit
(Note: this exhibit closes on April 24, 2011.) and the coral reef exhibit both in the Natural History Museum. We enjoyed the splendor of a vast variety of orchids in all different colors and shapes. Unlike prior years, this exhibit was staged in themes ("Orchids in Chinese Art & Culture"; "Orchids in Chinese Medicine"; "Orchid Extravaganza") with some of the same artwork we viewed at the Sackler complimenting the flowers and providing us with a new perspective. The Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef exhibit (Note: this exhibit closes on April 24, 2011.) was particularly intriguing as both an educational and creative display. The coral reef was mostly composed of crocheted yarn. The beautiful "toxic reef" was crocheted plastic juxtaposing the danger that discarded plastic trash causes to the marine life including sea animals, live coral and plants. The white reef was symbolic of the dead coral as a result of the pollution that we as people should prevent by not dumping waste into our oceans.

To top off our cultural and educational outing, we dined on clams with black bean sauce, prawns with candied walnuts, whole Cantonese fried chicken with garlic sauce, baby bok choy, seafood chow foon, salty spicy pork chop, seafood with lotus and chives, and bitter melon with pork at Ming's (617 H Street, NW) in Chinatown starting with an appetizer of shrimp and vegetable tempura
compliments of the owner for our group. A juicy plate of orange slices and fortune cookies completed the sumptuous meal.
