LCC,
I have heard of this book, but have not bought it as have been under the impression that being self-sufficient, even after all is set up, is very hard work. Rather than being relieved that you are self-sufficient, it seems there would be a crushing to-do list on your shoulders. Is that your impression?

About the neighbors fruit trees, I allowed a friend/coworker to live in a camper in my backyard as a geobachelor, and he used the camper bathroom for urine waste only. Where it drained out of the camper, mixed with flush water, the grass was always much greener than the surrounding areas. So, something in the urine/water mix was beneficial to grass (Nitrogen levels maybe?) so it makes sense it would work with other greenery.

What does it mean to have a self-sufficient garden? It probably means something a little different to everyone. DaNelle started to take an interest in a healthier lifestyle after suffering from two debilitating chronic diseases. On a mission to create a farm of her own, DaNelle forced, or rather 'lovingly persuaded' her husband to purchase a ranch home on an acre of land and transform it into their very own urban farm. DaNelle blogs at Weed 'em & Reap where she writes about the sustainable backyard farming, traditional food, & natural remedies.

About 8 years ago, when I first started creating regular content on backyard vegetable growing in raised beds (particularly the high sided ones) there wasn't much interest. However, these days there are plenty more people who have joined the raised bed "revolution" and realise this method of food gardening is the best.

Of course, these claims are all complete myths and I have even written a whole article here that debunks a good 10 of them. Regardless, the naysayers have mostly tapered off with more and more backyard veggie growers either building or buying their own raised beds, although, I do still get the odd trolling comment on my YouTube videos.
