Hey Rob, that's a shocker.
Yep - we had incorrect water readings August/September, a difference of 165 units overcharged nothing compared to yours, and awaiting City to rectify our matter.
Inspectors came to check our meter reading last week.
Hope yours gets sorted pronto.
I suggest a letter of complaint giving your meter number and readings, last invoiced details etc, and send to: acco...@capetown.gov.za, they seem to be prompt to replya and address.

THe statement I received today claims that we  consumed 936000 kl of water, at a staggering cost of R 21 415 !! This is clearly impossible: we have a small garden (which we don't water in winter) and no swimming pool! (The water metering period, according to the statement, covers 97 days.)

Any advice would be gratefully received!

Typical of how the city DOES NOT WORK FOR YOU.No bill like that should
be allowed to be sent out. Its a computer that does it and it should
be able to be programmed with sane values and anything outside of a
reasonable range should be flagged for attention. I had a similar
problem and they ended up replacing the water meter as the reading
they had on my account was the same as what was showing on the meter -
the meter was faulty.

When I started following up I got the usual pay because that's what
you owe. Its amazing the amount of morons working for the city who
look at the bill and cannot understand it is a physical impossibility
to use that much water never mind anything else. That's almost 10000kl
per day!!!!! My pool is 22kl and took about 12 hours to fill up so
assuming you left your tap on all day for the period the maximum you
could use would be about 4000kl See where I get the moron term from.

Check your meter and see if the reading is what they say it is - could
be a whole bunch of digits added in - I doubt your meter could meter
that much water in the first place.

But as soon as you get to speak to a non-moron you should have it
sorted out quite quickly.

Thanks for this reassuring response!!!
I'm working on it. The first problem is to get an operator to answer the
phone!

Trevor, is it possible to create an unnatural flood around your property on the councils expense?

Rob,

The last time I had such a problem I can remember that eventually I had to sit in a very long queue where a few computer operators were serving very many complainants. I can remember how thankful I was because they did not force me to stand whilst waiting in the queue. Luckily I was sitting next to a very talkative elderly lady who engaged with me in interesting conversation. I think she spoke to me about the stars and the moon and stuff like that. But when this very friendly and pleasant woman ended up at the front of the queue she became furious like hell with the man behind the glass window. I suspect that he had told her to shut up and pay up. Maybe we should start switching to rainwater. This is how we can build a rain barrel. The size of the barrel can also be much bigger. We can also install a few barrels in a row; or in a circle if you like circles. With all the rain we are getting, we will never run out of water.

Best of Luck

Johan

Rob,

Was your water account ever sorted out?

Insurance policies often extend to loss of water by leaking limited to R7.500
