Dear Obs residents,
On 25 May 2013, Lower Main Road will become Open Streets! This will be your chance to enjoy your street in a new way by coming out to cycle, skate, jog, walk, dance, paint, act or simply watch Lower Main come to life.
Inspired by Bogota’s Ciclovia, Open Streets are a temporary network of car-free areas and routes throughout the city. The concept has been successfully implemented around the world and the 25th of May will be the formal launch of Cape Town’s own Programme. Open Streets Cape Town builds on city and civic efforts, including events like the 2003-2004 car-free day festivals, 2012 Open Streets in Grassy Park and Moonlight mass bicycle rides amongst others.
The plan is to “open” Lower Main Road in Observatory (from Main Rd to Albert Rd.) on 25 May, 2013 from 13:00 to 17:00 to people and closing it to motorized vehicles. This will create a space for residents to interact, play, or just set up a chair and hang out.
Open Streets can only happen with your participation.
Examples from other cities include yoga, aerobics, chalk-drawing, hopscotch, scavenger hunts, relay races, martial arts, busking, face painting, hula hoops, bicycle parking, outdoor living room, flashmobs, art exhibits, etc. You can also just come, experience and feel the freedom of a car-free street.
All you need to do is step on to street that Saturday afternoon; and enjoy. However, if you would like to work with us to develop an activity or if there’s something specific you’d like to see and enjoy, please email in...@openstreets.co.za with the following:
1. What would you like to see on Open Streets?
2. If you would like to organize an activity, what activity would you like to organise and where?
2. If you are not able to organise an activity but would like to help in the lead up and/or during Open Streets
4. Share your suggestions to make the day an unforgettable experience for those who live in Obs.
With only 30 DAYS to organize this event, we’d love to hear from you as soon as possible so we can ensure your comments are reflected on the day.
Please note that Open Streets welcomes everyone and there should not be a cost to the public for any activities that will happen that day.
There will be community planning meetings on May 2, 9, 16 & 23. We look forward to seeing you there, so stay tuned for more details. In the meantime, do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
Looking forward to seeing you soon,
Open Streets Cape Town & OBSID

Open Streets in Cape Town
2013
What are Open Streets?
Inspired by Bogota’sCiclovia, Open Streets aim to create a temporary network of car-free areas and routes throughout Cape Town.
Open Streets Cape Town is a citizen-driven initiative working to design and promote streets which embed and generate respect for people, regardless of who they are, and how they move.
Dear friend of Open Streets,
It has been almost a year since we started talking and dreaming together of Open Streets. Since then, a group of volunteers came together under the banner “Open Streets Cape Town” and has continued to work in bringing together the City and other relevant stakeholders for the launch of a long-term Open Streets effort in Cape Town.
The City has made its support official; however we are still in the process of working out the budget. While that process continues, we would like to ask for your support to help us make Open Streets a reality… in the next 30 days!
Our proposal is to “open” Lower Main Road in Observatory (from Main Rd to Albert Rd.) on 25 May, 2013 from 13:00 to 17:00. Why this area? It is long enough to be cycled and skated on; it connects different communities along the route; it is located near major transport hubs; it supports local businesses and it has the full support and commitment of the Observatory Improvement District and some of its residents. Furthermore, there are lots of other activities happening that day that dovetail nicely with our ethos: the date coincides with Africa Day, the monthly bicycle ride#moonlightmass as well as the world-wide movement “100 in 1 day” (aiming to mobilise citizens to utilise public space in creative and constructive ways in major cities around the world).
So what do we ask from you?
We want you to help us organize activities to make the day a success. Things like yoga, aerobics, zumba classes, cricket, football games, street theatre, flashmobs or anything that can enable people taking ownership of the streets for the day.
Please email in...@openstreets.co.za with the following:
1. What activity can you help organise?
2. A list of requirements (location needs, equipment, volunteers, communications support, etc.)
3. If you are not able to organise an activity is there anything else you can help with in the lead up and/or during Open Streets?
4. When do you need to have confirmation from our end in order to commit to carrying out this activity?
We know this is a tight timeframe but we only have 30 DAYS to organize this event!
Please be creative in your planning -Open Streets welcomes everyone and there should not be a cost to the public.
We will host our first planning meeting with the community in Obs TODAY http://bit.ly/177o9XX. Feel free to join; else stay tuned for the next planning meeting with volunteers.
With your help, we are thrilled to take the first step of this long-term dream! We hope you will join us in this journey!
