Hi all...

There's a new pic of Ceres (from the asteroid belt between Mars & Jupiter) floating around the Internet because a NASA craft is close-by.  It's using the news headline:

"NASA's Dawn spacecraft releases new images of dwarf planet Ceres"

So, it is called a Dwarf Planet.  Since this is VERY small compared to planets - about 14% the diameter of Mars - it has, in the past, sometimes been called an asteroid.  Now just about anything smaller than Mercury might be called a Dwarf Planet.  Still, the pics are cool.

So, to add some perspective on this, I'd refer y'all to a paper I published a few years back.  It's not too long and should be a simple read for everyone:

Dr. J,

Good paper.

I would also note that as far as I can tell as bodies orbiting other stars are being discovered they are all being refered to as "planets".  That's true regardless of their size or orbit.  Of course all so far discovered have been large due to current limits of our detection methods but some odd and very elliptical orbits have been found out there.

Double standard . . .

Jim

Thnx... and yes, very good point about outside discoveries.
