Well y'all...
We're coming to the end of Space Week. I'm struck by two things:
1. It is an incredible thing that a spacecraft could be landed onto a comet. It has already screwed itself into the surface mounted a thermometer onto the surface for tracking temperature. This is really an amazing thing.
2. It is all with mixed emotions because it was the European Space Agency that did it. In other words it was not us. China and Japan have growing space interests. The ESA obviously has their act together. Russia can go to and from the space station. Even private companies are trying to make their mark. Yet, while the US has landed on the moon and explored the planets, and George Bush had set an agenda to go back, under the current administration we cannot even get a man into space. We have to rent rides from Russia. It's a sad state indeed.
As you see, I'm a supporter of manned space flight. I appreciate robotic exploration but I still think we (people) have to go there.
See you all on Thursday evening at the new location. I'll be doing a basic presentation on the "Hobby of..." including some discussion of telescopic equipment, etc.
