Success. I was hoping to get a bit of dark showing around the letters and
there's enough to make me happy. I used starbond brown medium CA.

Bridge wood

Hi Folks.

I'm finalising two experimental Irish bouzouki builds that I started a few

years ago: one 4-course, one 8-course, and will appreciate your help. As

I'm no longer making strung instruments, so these projects have been

gathering dust in storage for a while.

The original plan was to use CF+blackwood for the bridges, but I no longer

have my laminating epoxy at hand. I've sold my Gore books a long time ago

too, so no reference book for me to open.

Do you think I'm fine using solid rosewood for 8 and 10 steel strings? Or

is this a job for ebony?

It's my first flat-top steelstring, hence my complete lack of knowledge,

but my classical background suggests ebony will be way too heavy? Years ago

I've switched to Gore-style CF bridges on classicals and Red Henry style

bridges for archtops, so have always gone out of my way to make a

lightweight bridge. Ebony just doesn't seem right to use here...

Thanks!

I would use rosewood for the bridge without any worries. It's plenty

strong, and much more stable than ebony.

I have gold mother of pearl letters I want to put in this ambrosia maple

headstock veneer. I have some of this Gluboost fill and finish CA formula.

This piece of wood is a full 1/8 in thick and my plan is to put a piece of

packing tape over the pockets on the top side (shellacked), fit the letters

in from the back and ensure that they are in contact with the tape. Then I

would flip it over and get the glue in there to seal it from the back side.

I may have to do a couple of layers with this Gluboost. After everything is

cured well I will sand to a 16th of an inch or so.

I haven't tried anything like this before so I'm open to criticisms and

tips.

Thank you, folks!

Ukulele Course

Hi Dennis,

I purchased Heidi's course for my first ever build which was a concert

ukulele. The course example is a tenor uke but all the principles are the

same as far as I can tell.

I found the course to be an excellent guide to the planning, preparing,

building, and finishing of an instrument. I was very happy with how my

instrument turned out for a first effort. It's worth noting that Heidi's

course includes a simplified version of Robbie's FP course (which I

subsequently purchased and found extremely helpful) relying on

sawdust-and-shellac as the sole form of pore filling. From what I recall

without going back to check, she does not bind the body. The instrument

still looks good.

I am only answering part of your question as I can't compare it with the

other course. But I will add that Heidi's course, Robbie's FP and fretting

course (the Kent Everett version) plus the Cumpiano book were the

instructional sources for my first guitar build: a steel string with

bolt-on neck, the result of which, given my novice skill level, I am happy

with.

Hoping this information is helpful to your decision making. ...Ted

[image: IMG_0853.jpeg]I just finished two LH guitars (one for my grandson)
and have a few odds n ends that might be useful to someone. Four Tusq
saddles (all compensated), a LH rosewood bridge, two sets of rosewood
bridge pins (one with MOP insets). If interested, let me know. I’m thinking
$50 for everything? But I’m open to suggestions.

I am selling my drum sander including extra pre-cut sand paper. My shop is
in my basement and quite small and I am out of room to house the many tools
that I have. This is a great tool at a good price if you're in the market
for one!
Selling for $700.

I'd snap that up in a heartbeat, depending on location of course.

Hi Chuck
Keep in mind that the gold layer is thin and easy to sand through, leaving white - happened to a friend…. You might try setting the pearl deep enough to have a layer of clear CA on top that can be sanded with the wood.
