I have been using a vacuum bridge clamp to attach bridges to guitars for almost 20 years now. It is A LOT easier than using traditional soundhole clamps and you don't run the risk of damaging the guitar or its finish during the gluing process. Recently a student of mine and I re-designed the vacuum bridge clamp and I am happy to report that it is now available for purchase. This O'Brien Guitars/Lutherie Academy authorized and approved version is very lightweight and uses a clear collapsible membrane making it easy to view the bridge during the entire clamping process. Click on the image below to see how easy it is to glue a bridge to your soundboard using this clamp. it is also available for ukuleles as well. The link above will take you to my student's webpage where you can make the purchase and he will ship it directly to you.
Happy Clamping!

Do you have a recommendation for the sort of vacuum that would be needed to go with this?

Any small portable vacuum pump will work. You can use the cheap harbor freight version or a more expensive one. Joewoodworker.com even has a DIY model you can make yourself.

Oil-less is the important requirement.

I don't know, but not much. That will just determine how fast the membrane collapses. There isn't much air to remove.

Pretty sure almost any pump will do this without any difficulty.

The HF cheapo pumps are oil based and can put out an oil mist apparently.  If you use one, put it outside your workspace.

All the Joe Woodworker ones would work.  They are pricey.  I was not super excited about the customer service but the pump is nice.

You can also look for cheap medical pumps on eBay.  They are lower powered but I think would be fine for this.  You're pulling a very limited volume.

At the beginning of the year, I purchased one of Joe Woodworker's vacuum pump kits. I was impressed with the design/engineering of it and the very explicit instructions to assemble it. Mine went together with no issues at all. It works really well.

That is surprising, I have had nothing but awesome service from Joe.  I’ve built 2 of his systems over the years and they are fantastic.

just my experience.  I was not super impressed.  Nothing hugely awful but ultimately there were things I wasn't particularly happy about.

Hey Robbie - with the success of your new bridge clamp (yes, I have one :-), how about a new and improved body vacuum clamp - like the old LMI but better :-)

Just thinking ..
