Hello everyone,
I have ventured into a new area of guitar building using Robbie’s semi hollow body guitar course. I feel a little bit in no man’s land with regard to the electronics. I’m hoping that some of you electric guitar builders out there can offer some feedback on which pickups to use. There are a several different humbucker pickups available through StewMac all within a reasonable price range. I’m just wondering if any of you are familiar with the sound quality of any of these. (Robbie, if you have any recommendations?)

I would really appreciate any input or  recommendations any of you might have.
Thanks in advance.

Brian,
I built a few electrics for my son, he was always interested in the pick up aspect of the build.  I'd suggest Seymour Duncan, I believe they have sound samples on their website.  I'm in Ohio and have shopped a lot from StewMac, but I personally would recommend going to a pick up manufacturer.  I think pickups are a really personal choice, you have to know the sound you're looking for.   For what it's worth.

Good Luck
David

Seymour Duncan Jazz/JB set is what I use most often.  I find it to be a really versatile set.

I wire them with a 6 way freeway switch with coil splitting and I like to put in a phase switch on a push pull pot for out of phase sounds.

I def recommend the freeway switch.  The out of phase thing is something some people like and some people don't.  Notable players are Peter Green and Mark Speer of Khruangbin.
