TheCisco ASR 1004 Router in a 4-rack unit (RU) form factor supports up to 8 shared port adapters (SPAs) and comes with one route processor and one embedded services processor slot. This provides flexibility for future upgrades, enhancing control plane and data plane scalability. The Cisco ASR 1004 Router provides up to 40 Gbps throughput support, making it a very cost-effective edge solution.

(...Cisco ASR 1004 Router) do not support ISSU upgrade or downgrade. Instead subpackage software upgrade is supported only if the router is running in subpackage mode. If that's the case how does one confirm the router is running in subpackage mode with a code that, if I'm not mistaken, was loaded without the subpackages. Also, what are the steps?


The problem I have is that the documentation has (new for me) steps that requires the extraction of packages from the file I posted above. It's all for ISSU and I have one RP. The current software running simply required the boot statement and that was it.


Regarding your query on how to verify if your ASR is running in subpackage mode you can just do a "show version" and look for the line "System image file is" and you will confirm if its booting from a packages.conf file or a consolidated .bin file:


It's definitely booting from a .bin file and not a .conf file. I just wanted to make sure I did or didn't have to go through that process as I'm familiar with the commands you've provided. The confusion came about also because of Table 5-1 in the following link:

The Cisco 1004 is an ISDN router that connects small, remote Ethernetlocal-area networks (LANs) to wide-area networks (WANs) using IntegratedServices Digital Network (ISDN). This new router features an ISDNBasicRate Interface (BRI) with an integrated Network Termination 1 (NT1) device,which reduces the number of devices required to connect to ISDN in NorthAmerica. The Cisco 1005 is a synchronous serial router that connectssmall, remote Ethernet LANs to WANs using leased lines, Frame Relay,Switched Multimegabit Data Service (SMDS), Switched-56, and X.25.


The Cisco 1004 and Cisco 1005 routers are ideal for small remote offices thatrequire cost-effective solutions for part- or full-time connectivity toheadquarters and other central site locations. The routers are also amodel solution for transparent, inexpensive Internet access. With theintroduction of the Cisco 1004 and Cisco 1005, companies have more choicesfor connecting their small, remote sites inexpensively without sacrificingease of use, said Kevin Kennedy, product management director of Cisco'sRemote Access Products. Plus, these two new products take advantage of theCisco InternetworkOperating System (Cisco IOS), making them extremelyflexible and simple to manage. This introduction reinforces Cisco'sleadership in small branch and remote office internetworking.


The RISC-based Cisco 4700, when used in combination with Cisco's ATMNetwork Processor Module announced in July 1995, is optimized forAsynchronous TransferMode (ATM) backbone access, reliable IBMData-Link Switching(DLSw) internetworking and routing of native Advanced Peer-to-Peer (APPN) traffic.


The Cisco 4700 is also ideally suited as a central site or backbonerouter to handle SNA networking or other multiprotocol traffic when used asa DLSw router or border peer or as an APPN network node. Using Cisco'sDownstream PU Concentration function, the 4700 can also be used as a concentrator for hundreds of SNA devices.


The Cisco 4000 series of router products, which includes the high-performanceCisco 4700 router, features the industry's broadest set of connectivityoptions and are the industry's most widely used routers with more than80,000 units installed worldwide. Cisco Network Processor Modules availablefor this series include Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI, ATM, serial, ISDN BRI,and ISDN PRI interfaces.

The introduction of these three new routers follows the recent agreementfor Cisco to acquire Combinet, Inc., a leading maker of ISDNremote-accessnetworking products. Cisco plans to employ Combinet technology (softwareapplications and platforms) to increase its leadership position in thefast-growing telecommuting arena. The Cisco 1000 series, because of itsvariety of WAN alternatives, sophisticated software features and managementcapabilities, will continue to provide Cisco customers with flexible,low-cost corporate branch office connectivity, small-office connectivityand corporate telecommuter solutions. Customers can expect to see the firstCisco-labeled Combinet products in the fourth quarter of 1995.
