IE 8 error - some layout issues

Hello
I've a page using page, leftCol and main - the looks fine in Safari,
Firefox and even IE8 - however, when switching IE8 to compatibility
mode, the left column gets floated and the content of the main div
floats around the leftCol - is there a quick fix to prevent this from
happening.
