R.I.P. TONY "HONKY" HUSSEIN HINDE (1953-2008)
Wednesday, 11 June 2008
The father of Maldivian surfing laid to rest at Mollymook, South
Coast
NSW.
On Tuesday afternoon, 27th May, Tony Hussein Hinde passed away while
surfing his beloved Pasta Point on North Male Atoll in the Maldives,
apparently of a heart attack.
His was an extraordinary life, albeit cut short way too soon - he had
just turned 55.
In 1973, Tony and life-long mate Mark Scanlon (a fellow Maroubra
surfer) were shipwrecked in the Maldives while sailing from Sri Lanka
to Africa - a serendipitous event as it turned out. (It's an amazing
story, chronicled in The Surfers Journal, Vol 10#2, and Pacific
Longboarder Vol 5#4.) Tony stayed on to discover the surf of the
Maldives and be adopted by the people of Himmafushi, and then for 15
years oversaw the best kept surf secret ever. He fell in love and
married the very special Zulfa, raised a family, and established and
operated a first class surf tour for the past 17 years. Tony was a
man
admired and loved by so many people.
On Tuesday, 3rd June, with a cold, southerly front threatening,
about
150 friends and family gathered at Mollymook to be part of Tony's
final resting ceremony. He was buried next his beloved Zulfa, who'd
recently passed away from leukemia. Mark Scanlon and Ian Lyon
delivered heartfelt insights into Tony's life. Ian is Tony's first
and
only Aussie business partner (Atoll Adventures/Atoll Travel) to whom
he turned after finally deciding, in 1989, to operate a surf tour
operation based at Pasta Point.
Said Ian: "Tony was a person with his own charisma and a huge sense
of
often mischievous humour. He is survived by his son Ashley and
daughter Mishal; our thoughts are especially with them, also with
Dara, Suha, Mikey, Iboo, Mohamed, Ziyadh and all the Maldivians who
had worked for Atoll Adventures over the years and the people of the
island of Himmafushi. Also for his sisters, brothers and extended
family in Australia. Theirs is also a great loss."
As this goes to press, a WQS event is running in great waves at Pasta
Point - overseen by Dara, who with Tony and Zulfa has been the
operations manager at the surf resort for the past 12 years. As Tony
would say, 'the show must go on'.
Rest in peace Tony Hussein Hinde.
