A Kansas man was shot in the head with a nail gun – but only realised
a
two inch tack was embedded in his skull after a friend pointed it
out.

George Chandler's skull x-ray

George Chandler, of Shawnee, said his friend Phil Kern was using the
gun
on garden decking when the accident occured.

However, neither man realised what had happened, and thought they had
lost the nail.

It was only when Mr Kern saw it sticking out of Mr Chandler's
baseball
cap that the truth became clear: Mr Kern missed wood, and struck bone
instead.

A doctor later resorted to a claw hammer to yank the nail out of his
head.

"It never did really what you call hurt," Mr Chandler told NBC news.

The 60-year-old said he stood up just as his friend was moving the
gun
and it discharged.

When Mr Kern saw where the nail had lodged he ordered Mr Chandler to
sit
down while he called the emergency services.

A doctor tried unsuccessfully to remove the nail with a pair of
pliers.

"He looked at me and said, 'I need a claw hammer,"' Mr Chandler
recalled. "I thought, 'Ah, he's just teasing."'

But the doctor borrowed the DIY tool from a worker to finish the job
and
sent the patient home with a few stitches.

"He got a screwdriver at the same time, and he took the screwdriver
and
pried the nail up a little bit and got the claw hammer," Mr Chandler
said.
