Hello All,

We are currently using OBIA 11.1.1.8.1 PB-6 with some customization in ODI.

We are looking to upgrade to latest version of OBIA (which is 11.1.1.10.2 as of now) along OBIEE 12c and Database 12c.

As per Oracle documentation below is the upgrade patch.

OBIA 11.1.1.8.1 - PB6 --> OBIA 11.1.1.9.2 --> OBIA 11.1.1.10.1 --> OBIA 11.1.1.10.2
OBIEE 11.1.1.x to OBIEE 12.x is Outplace upgrade.
Database 11g to 12c upgrade is possible.

Above upgrade patch seems to be very hectic exercises and we may stuck in certain areas.

I was just thinking to have fresh install of OBIA 11.1.1.10.2 and follow below procedure which looks technically feasible to me.

1. Migrate BIACM configuration from OBIA 11.1.1.8.1 to OBIA through migration utility (never tested)
2. Migrate Security, RPD, Catalog using migration assistant. (OBIEE way)
3. Migrate custom components of ODI to new version.

Please provide your expert opinion on both the approaches which will be convenient and efficient to follow.

Thanks in advance.

Regards
Naeem Akhtar

1 )and 3 )works and I have done it.you might run into a small glitch on migrating setup data in 1 as you may not find certain content in biacm 11.1.1.10.2 , that you had in 11.1.1.8.1.
I do not remember exactly what it is but it can be fixed .
For 3), unless you want to use the new columns from the fact tables, that got added in 11.1.1.10.2 , you should be good
For 2)you have to use the the jar/bar approach oracle recommends when migrating from 11g to 12c.

you may need to consider two things when you handle upgrades:

- What is the upgrade path for lower environments and if you do fresh install, does that mean you will have parallel lower environment builds?
- Since you may do it differently compared to what oracle prescribes, does oracle certifies you upgrade path? and accept support?

Hi Kris,

Thanks for your email.

Regarding point 3, New columns in the fact will have impact if that particular Fact is customized and was copied in custom folder with newly generated scenario. Correct?

Any other watch out?

Naeem

If I am thinking right, In the model you will have the columns from
Customization. But in the backend db you will have the new columns but they will have nulls..

Is that what your question is?

Got you, this is not a big deal.

Wanted to see how to cook big fish. few things here and there are okay unless no big issue arise later in the process.
