What are the thoughts on migrating from Drupal 7 before the End of Life in November 2021? (https://www.drupal.org/psa-2019-02-25)

Is the plan to move to Drupal 8 and then 9, go directly to 9 or are you considering an alternative framework altogether?

Thanks,

Ramin H.A.

Hi Sam,

We are thinking of upgrading to Drupal 8 and did some very simple preliminary tests. We still need to investigate the before embarking on the development.

We welcome any suggestions you may have and your opinion on Drupal in general, consider the later as a survey question :)

Best,
Ramin

Hi Ramin,

From what I've read I think it will probably be safer to go from 7 to 8 (and then 9) rather than straight to 9, it will probably be a fair bit of work and will need quite a bit of testing. Maybe that is something the community can help with.

I haven't used Drupal much and only as an administrator rather than a developer. As an administrator, my biggest issue with Drupal is around doing updates. Drupal has frequent updates and anything relating to security needs to be applied promptly. Not a problem in itself, however I find the Drupal update process a bit flaky and I never trust doing updates just with Drush. I always want to check after each step. I've had a couple of times when what looks like a simple updated has totally screwed the environment and has taken half a day to restore from backups.

I know there are several ways to do updates so maybe I need to try them out. Do you have a process that works for you?

Thanks,

Sam

Hi Sam,
For now, we agree that Upgrading to Drupal 8 is the best option,
In regards to Updating our Drupal platforms Routine, we are using Aegir: https://www.aegirproject.org in conjunction with Ansible, and an ansible playbook that we already implemented https://galaxy.ansible.com/obiba/obiba-ansible-deployment-aegir,
The playbook needs some bug fix and to be adjusted but I suggest you take it a look, your suggestions are welcome.
At the end un upgrade of our platform consist of command that lunch all the magic to backup, update, deploy, and put online the site in a couple of minutes, the Aegir hosting system gives as swiss knife tools to manage periodic backups, restoring a recovery point from old backups/platform, deploying to staging/dev/production environment etc...

Hope that helped you
Regards,
Samir
