I think if we can sort out a list of software instances for submission it may be fairly easy to add, and a coordinated action between DT and Instrument seems like a good idea.
I'm happy with adding instances in IAO, cc'ing Alan (he's the insider, right? ;) ) to see if he has any objection.

Forwarding to DT branch.  It would seem from this that we should submit our list of software (e.g. GenePattern modules) to IAO for inclusion there.  Seems sensible.  Luckily we have an insider on IAO working on DT... :)  I'll sort out a list and send it on.

Something I don't think we need to say, but which I believe to be true

Barry can correct me if I have this wrong.

Ok. Software can be an ambiguous term. In this case you are referring
to an information entity that inheres in the instrument once the
software is installed. You won't go too wrong by creating an instance
of Software (http://purl.obofoundry.org/obo/IAO_0000010) and saying
that any instance of Voyage De-STR  that has that software installed
is bearer of that instance. If you wish you can say that the software
is_about the data acquisition and processing functions of the
instrument.

There are some subtleties involving versions, source code, alternative
platforms, etc that need to be worked out, but as I said, if you do
the above I think that any changes, should there be any, will be
minor.

Could you give me some more specific examples of usage?
-Alan

So the Voyage De-STR is a mass spectrometer which has software called
Data Explorer ™ software for flexible acquisition and data processing.
The software can be upgrade, while the instrument remains the same, as
per computers and operating systems.

Dear IAO,

The OBI instrument branch was wondering if the class _software_ is
included in the IAO, and if so would the realizes relation be suitable
to say that a device, runs software?

device realizes software
computer realizes operating_system

Cheers

Frank (on behalf of the instrument branch)
