Hello Hashers,

Chennai Hash celebrates its 14th Anniversary outside India in Kathmandu, capital city Nepal, on Wednesday-8th – Saturday 11th October 2014. Most of our anniversaries run are always out of Chennai, within India & this will be our 4th overseas trip.

The committee has returned from Kathmandu & Chitwan, Nepal after checking out hotels, transport & other details for our 14^th Anniversary in October’14. We have finalised hotels at Kathmandu & Chitwan; however, since we were unable to get one hotel to accommodate all of us under one roof we are taking 2 hotels. Also, since Chitwan doesn’t have too many cottages, we have limited to 130 persons only.  The first 60 registrations will get to stay at Barahi Jungle Lodge, Chitwan. We are awaiting room-rates from our travel agent in Kathmandu; and the registration fee will be out

by

early April ’14.

Where is Nepal?

Suggestion: Hashers from India /Chennai – book your ticket for the 7^th Oct late flight to Delhi & hangout at the Delhi International airport & catch the first flight on 8^th Oct to Kathmandu.  Spicejet/Indigo has announced 50 % discounts if you book early.

Do one need visa to enter Nepal?

All foreign nationals, (except Indians), need visas to enter Nepal. One can obtain from any Nepalese embassy or consulate. You can also get a visa on arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu or at the Immigration Office at the entry points of Nepal.  http://welcomenepal.com/promotional/faq/

Rates for Hotels in Nepal:-

As per the Nepal govermernt rule Foreign nationals (other than Indians) will pay in USD, slight more than the locals & Indians.

Hotels at Kathmandu:

1.      Manasula Hotel will be the main venue for Gala Dinner (Management has promised 45 rooms).

2.      Gangjong Hotel -10 to 15 mins walks to Manasula Hotel.

(Both these hotels are loacted in the heart of the city, close to Thamel, the shopping & tourist centre)

 Cottages at Chitwan:-

1.      Barahi Judgle Lodge will be our main venue for Run & Gala Dinner. (Barahi Jungle Lodge is new & was opened last September 2013, management has assured 34 cottages). http://www.barahijunglelodge.com/

Some History of Kathmandu:-

Kathmandu is the capital and largest urban agglomerate of Nepal. The city stands at an elevation of approximately 1,400 metres (4,600 ft) in the bowl-shaped Kathmandu Valley of central Nepal. It is surrounded by four major mountains: Shivapuri, Phulchoki, Nagarjun, and Chandragiri. Kathmandu Valley is part of three districts (Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur), has the highest population density in the country, and is home to about a twelfth of Nepal's population. As the largest (and pretty much the only) city in the country, Kathmandu also feels like another developing-world city rushing into a modern era of concrete and traffic pollution. Take a walk in the backstreets, however, and the capital's amazing cultural and artistic heritage reveals itself in hidden temples overflowing with marigolds, courtyards full of drying chillis and rice, and tiny hobbit-sized workshops largely unchanged since the Middle Ages. Kathmandu has been a traveller’s mecca since the 1960s but these days you're less likely to see a tie-dyed hippy in search of enlightenment than a well-heeled Gore-Tex-clad tourist in search of a good espresso. Chitwan:-

Chitwan is about approx 145 kms from Kathmandu, time takes will about 5/6 hrs by surface. Chitwan literally means “heart of the jungle”. In recent years Chitwan tops the list of things to do in Asia. It is a truly wildlife adventure of a different kind – jungle safaris on elephant backs or jeeps, birdwatching, canoe rides and jungle walks. The Chitwan National Park is Asia’s best preserved conservation area, where wildlife thrives and their habitats remain intact. The park lies in the Inner Terai lowlands and consists of Sal forests, tall elephant grasslands, hills, ox-box lakes and flood plains of the Narayani, Rapti and Reu rivers.Enlisted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Natural) in 1984, the park spreads over an area of 932 sq. km.

Climate:-

October and November are the best months to visit Kathmandu. The weather and visibility during this month are perfect for trekking and outdoor activities. The average daytime temperatures are around 20°C (68°F):  perfect to enjoy hikes and walks around the town without getting sweaty. October has also a fair chance of rain, however if it does rain it does not last for more than a couple of hours and is usually followed by clear weather.

What to Wear & Bring:-

It is advisable to carry some warm and light jackets as the evenings can get very chilly, running shoes, mosquito repellent, camera, your specific medicines, and of course ..you’re  Hash Spirit!!!

 Language spoke:-

Pali is national language but English is widely spoken. The ethnic groups speak various language and dialects
