I've spent years building up playlists and music like many folks. I recently subscribed to Apple Music. Tonight, I added a few tracks to one particular playlist and then that playlist alone (out of many) would not sync up. I read to uncheck "sync devices" so I did that on my iMac then toggled it back. This step made all of the playlists sync to my phone again. Good stuff. But then I noticed on my iMac a single playlist just disappeared. When I glanced down at my phone, the playlist was still there and then, just like that, "poof" it was gone. I guess it synced up.

Appreciate the response but I've done this basic stuff. This was an existing pre-Music playlist I've had created for years. I added Apple Music tracks to it. It then disappears when synced. I have only one other device, my phone. I have to constantly "toggle" the sync library to keep stuff disappearing.

I understand from your post that a playlist you created using songs downloaded from Apple Music disappeared after syncing with your Mac. To have all your music available on all your devices, you will want to enable Sync Library using the steps from this article:

Do you keep your computer backed up? A possible line of recovery would be to take your computer offline, restore a backup version of the library that contains the lost playlist. Open Music and export the playlist as an XML file. Close Music and revert back to the most recent version of the library, go back online, then import the playlist you exported earlier.

Turingtest2: Yes, I keep my computer backed up. I'd like to figure out whether Music going to continue losing my playlists or am I going to have to keep doing this. Really stinks to have these glitches. Thanks.

Thanks for the note. To confirm, you mean all of these programs lose music when they sync? That's depressing if so. I certainly am not deleting my own playlists by mistake multiple times that I've had for years.

No, I mean that all software does exactly what it is told to do, even when that isn't necessarily what the user intended, or is a response to an inadvertent command, or is a bug in the software. Word users lose documents, Excel users lose spreadsheets, iTunes users find songs that are supposed to be in their library are missing or not where iTunes is looking for them. Those with a decent backup regime can recover from such issues, those without not so much. Clearly Music isn't supposed to discard playlists at random. Determining exactly what happened at this point however is nigh on impossible. Stuff happens.

Ok--I think I understand I guess. The software is doing what it was programmed to do, whether good or bad. From my perspective, I'm not doing anything wrong. It's pretty simple to check "sync library" and expect it to sync. One time I literally watched as 2 playlists just disappeared during syncing for no reason I can discern. It's happened repeatedly in a few days after multiple times of apple support telling me to sign out, sign back in, toggle sync, toggle it back, etc. Frustrating. Not a smooth experience.

For security you might want to export all of your playlists as XML files. Under normal circumstances if a playlist that is synced to a device is later removed from it that could potentially be mirrored in the library when the device is next synced. Begs the question how it might have been removed from the device if you didn't do it, but could perhaps explain how syncing caused a playlist to be deleted.

This is happening to me too. It's extremely frustrating, especially since you can't delete songs from your library without removing them from playlists too. I updated to the newest version of IOS in hopes it would help-- no luck. As others have said, if you are really really quick on adding a song after turning the setting off yet again it seems to work sometimes, but that's annoying, unreliable, and only lets you add one song at a time.

If you're wanting to add songs to a playlist , go to the playlist and select "edit". Then add the songs by search. I haven't had them added to my library and I added at least 6 new songs to a playlist.

This seems to a bug that crawled in after the last update. They need to fix this asap, it's annoying and it would definitely be a driving factor on me switching music streaming service. My music library is sacred. I add songs to a playlist and depending on a few factors they either ascend to my music library or stay in the playlist till whenever.

I am also having this problem, i thought i was the only one! It's so annoying because if i delete it from my library the whole album is deleted from my playlists. i thought updating it would help but it didn't. does anyone know how to fix this??

I'm having the same exact problem, and no, the Recently Added in Library is not the same as the Recently Added or Recently Played smart playlists. Both smart playlists still exist on my iMac so assuming this is an iOS17 issue on iPhone. Additionally, my Apple Music subscription is up to date, so that's not the issue either (and not all of my music was purchased through Apple Music either, so that wouldn't track). Open to any real suggestions and OP, if you find a fix, would you mind posting it here?

Now when creating a new playlist, of either an album or a compilation, cover artwork does not get updated and show (adding to Library does allow artwork but you still can't then transfer this to your playlist).

Is it just me, but surely most music lovers would much prefer to see album artwork rather than an impersonal and featureless design on their playlists - or at the very least have the option to choose this.

"A recent update to Apple Music on iOS changed how the artwork for a new Playlist is generated. Previously, a playlist would generate artwork by combining the artwork for the first four tracks in the playlist. Now, Apple Music on iOS uses a selection of abstract gradients for artwork on a new playlist. This is a backwards step. The previous behaviour was much better. At the very least, the old behaviour should be one of the options available to choose from."

I now have to do work to get something that used to just happen. Technology is supposed to make life easier. It is the very small things that can push the consumer to other companies. I hope that I will simply have the option to have my playlists like I used to with the album art automatically added.

I agree with everyone who says this change was a bad idea. I used the artwork to differentiate between playlists quickly, and I appreciated the amalgamation of album covers Apple Music generated when a playlist had songs from several albums.

Agree, was aware re camera option and fine if you want your own photos, but searching for consistent album cover artwork then uploading and saving, is a pain to say the least. If your playlist includes several different albums, the nice collage of artwork from the first 4 tracks that used to be generated automatically - well that's impossible to do yourself

For some reason Siri can no longer find playlists that I have created in Apple music. When I ask Siri to play an Apple Music curated list it will play. However if I was to ask "Hey Siri play Jon playlist" she will respond "I didn't find Jon on Apple music".

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately it didn't work. It isn't just a HomePod problem it is across all my Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, HomePod), it just does not recognise the playlists that I've created.

The random thing is when I do play a song from one of my personal playlist via Air Playing it, it does know the playlist. If I then ask Siri to play that playlist it will then say "I didn't find playlist on Apple music".

Same with me. It doesn't matter what i ask for whether is a playlist, artist, song title, all i get is "I didn't find ****** on apple music. Streaming from iphone or mac is fine. Not really what i want my homepods for tho!!!
