wich linux platform is to be preferred?

I tryied to compile broadcast encoder on debian with some efforts, and on ubuntu i get some troubles.

Is there a preferred linux flavour to handle broadcast encoder?

PS: i switched to ubuntu 'case debian was on a pci-e only server and i had a asi pci card ... so i had to fall back on a simple, older machine :-(
