Hello,
I am using Ubuntu 12.10 Desktop and am going do down the list of prereqs. I am currently experiencing this error when trying to install and build fdk-aac:

/usr/bin/ld: libAACdec/src/.libs/aacdec_drc.o: relocation R_X86_64_32S against `.rodata' can not be used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC
libAACdec/src/.libs/aacdec_drc.o: could not read symbols: Bad value
collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [libfdk-aac.la] Error 1

I feel like this is an error with a version of a reader or lib file.

Any help is greatly appreciated,

Hello,

Someone has reported this error message before but never provided further
information and I could never reproduce it.
If you run "make distclean", run "autoreconf -I" again and instead try
"./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-shared" does the problem go away?

Might also be worth trying with ./configure --disable-shared --prefix=/usr

Your procedure worked.  I will progress with my prereq installation.
Do you know why this error occured (trying to learn)?

Thank you!

I’m not really sure why this happens but I’ve added it to the wiki.
