Hi Everybody
I'm writing to let you know about campaign plans for the upcoming US
mid-term congressional election, and to ask for your help (not your
money). In 2008 we reached thousands of Americans in the UK We plan
once again to canvass the streets in our continued effort to get
valuable US voting information to the 200,000-300,000 US citizens
living in the UK.
We will have a Mid-Term Election Volunteer Conference Call on
Wednesday 8 September at 7.30pm. The agenda will be to advise you
about upcoming activities and tell you how you can help.
To attend the conference call, please send an email with the subject
line "September 8 Conference Call" to:
canva...@obamalondon.com.
IN YOUR EMAIL, please give your full name and a telephone number
(preferably a mobile number) where you can be reached. I will
distribute the dial-in details of the conference call closer to the
meeting day.
If you plan to attend, please send your email and you can stop reading
now.
But if you are in the UK and you are not yet convinced that you want
to help this year, then please keep reading and let me have just 2
minutes to tell you why I have decided to campaign in support of
Barack Obama again.
The upcoming mid-Term election is turning into THE key moment when we
find out how far this Administration can progress. The Democratic
Party holds a 40 seat majority in the House of Representatives.
Political scientists and historians tell us that mid-Terms normally
result in some losses for the part of the sitting President: the only
issue is how big a "correction" will take place.
Our candidate, now our President, has tried to work with the other
side. No one can accuse him of giving up too soon on a bipartisan
ideal. But the Republicans have made it painfully clear that they will
be playing partisan hardball for the foreseeable future. Our President
has taken that lesson to heart.
President Obama has already made some serious advances for all
Americans in the past 18 months. Many of us (me included) hoped that
we would have seen more, but the fact is there's more to do and
President Obama knows that.
So here's THE BOTTOM LINE: Think about American politics in the new
Congress of 2011 if the Republicans, lead by the likes of John Boehner
and Newt Gingrich and supported by Sarah Palin, recover a majority in
the House. We'll never learn what else could have been accomplished
with two more years of Congressional majority. We'll never find out
how much progress our President could have made with two more years of
support from a Democratic Speaker of the House. We'll move from the
uphill politics of today that make progress difficult, to a Boehner-
inspired morass that will make progress virtually impossible.
Please don't let it happen. Please join us as we continue our goal of
finding Americans giving them the information they need to participate
in American democracy right here in the UK.
I hope to hear you on the conference call on September 8.
Kind regards,
/s/ Rob
