to Obama London
Dear friends and fellow Democrats,

On March 31, Democrats Abroad UK will be having an election to chose
who will lead us through the 2012 election cycle. I very much hope
that you will be able to join us there, and to make sure your voice is
heard loud and clear in the selection of your leaders.

As many of you know, I am currently the elected Vice Chair of
Democrats Abroad UK, and I'll be running again in the hopes of serving
as your Vice Chair for a second term. But the purpose of this message
isn't to talk about me - it's to tell you about my friend Rob
Carolina.

Rob is putting his name forward in the hopes of being elected as your
Democrats Abroad, UK Chair in this next term of office. And I am
writing to tell you why I can think of no one who I would be prouder
to serve alongside. Rob and I both feel strongly that our core mission
in the next two years will be to create a fully inclusive organisation
that makes room for the wide range of talents and enthusiasms across
the organisation, in support of our electoral goals in 2012. I hope
that you will choose to exercise your vote in support of Rob's
candidacy.

I first met Rob back in the early days of the last Presidential
primary when he came to one of our monthly Speakeasies, talking with a
calm and persuasive conviction about his support for an impressive
junior Senator from Illinois. As the primary season rolled on, Rob
campaigned on the ground for then Senator Obama in critical primaries
in Ohio and Pennsylvania. When the long primary came to a close, and I
became one of the DNC’s Regional Field Director for Americans Abroad I
knew I would need a trusted person to manage the Obama London group
while I was coordinating volunteers amongst 7 countries. I asked Rob
him if he could lead that group. What I had in mind was maybe a few
nights per week and I tried to assure him that it wouldn't take too
much time from his busy and successful law practice.

I underestimated the man. I don't know how he managed to keep his
clients happy, but as far as I could see he was working a 60 hour week
recruiting and training hundreds of volunteers and setting up a system
of Zone Captains, running efforts in 12 target neighbourhoods in
London.

As I got to know him better I came to see that Rob is motivated in all
things by his desire to see hard-working people prosper. Whether it's
his concern for the struggling workers in his hometown in Ohio or his
belief in empowering activists to take charge of their own political
participation, Rob always keeps his eye on that ball.

After the election, Rob served on the nominating committee for the
DAUK elections, ably unpicking the procedural complexities of our
election process, and was elected to serve on the Executive Committee,
where he always given wise and thoughtful advice.

Rob and I have thought a lot about this coming election, and about the
two crucial years that will follow it. We've started to share some of
that thinking on a campaign website, and we'd encourage each of you to
check in with the site regularly as we share news and information, and
we invite each of you to share your own thoughts by posting in the
comments section on the site.

I am certain that there will be other candidates for office, and I'm
sure you will want to hear from them about how they will represent
you. But I am asking for your support for Rob's candidacy today
because he is one of the most effective and inspiring campaigners that
I have ever come across, and because I am impressed by his ideas for
creating an inclusive organisation that makes use of the very wide
range of skills and passions across our membership.

You may have questions about all of this. You surely have thoughts,
opinions and ideas. We want to hear them all – I’d urge each of you to
get in touch with Rob directly for a conversation about the future.
