Councilman Gabe Leland Returns Disability Task Force to City of Detroit
Task Force to serve as a bridge between city government and persons with disabilities
Detroit – This Friday, at 1 pm, January 20, 2016, at the STEP Detroit Resource Center located at 4700 Beaufait in Detroit, Council Member Gabe Leland will convene a meeting of the Detroit City Council Disability Task Force. This meeting in the community will tackle issues persons with disabilities and residents face during winter months. The Detroit City Council Disability Taskforce was previously chaired by Council President Brenda Jones and the late Council President Maryann Mahaffey.
“The Disability Task Force was established by the Detroit City Council because of our commitment to ensuring equal access to jobs, transportation, and housing for persons with disabilities. We are bringing policy makers, providers of essential resources and residents together to focus on housing, transportation and economic justice and improved service delivery,” said Councilman Gabe Leland who also chairs the Council's Planning and Economic Development Committee.
“The City of Detroit is defining it’s comeback through various projects and polices. As we effectuate change it is imperative that we defend the rights of the disability community,” added Councilman Leland.
“It has long been our dream for the City of Detroit to reinstate the Disability Task Force to serve as a bridge between city government and its residents with disabilities, said Hank Johnson, Executive Director of ARC Detroit and Facilitator for The People First Detroit, a self-advocacy organization for persons with disabilities residing in the City of Detroit.
Johnson added, “We are so thankful to Councilman Gabe Leland for his compassion and initiative in reinstating Council's Disability Task Force. We look forward to partnering with Councilman Leland and the leadership of the City of Detroit in addressing issues of employment, transportation, ADA compliance, and other quality of life issues. Thank you City of Detroit, America’s Compassionate City, for realizing our dream.”
On September 20, 2016, Councilman Leland introduced a resolution to re-establish the Detroit City Council Task Force. This resolution was adopted by the Detroit City Council after a series of town-hall meetings with residents on disability concerns hosted by Councilman Leland in the community.
