100 TO ATTEND "FIGHTING BLIGHT" WORKSHOP HOSTED BY COUNCILMAN GABE LELAND
Faith and Neighborhood Coalition to organize volunteer board ups one block at a time
Detroit, MI – This Saturday, January 7th at 10 am the Rippling Hope Mission and Service Center (12801 Joy Road), Detroit District 7 Councilman Gabe Leland will welcome over 100 District 7 residents to a workshop on organizing volunteer board ups. Rev. Carl Zerwick, Executive Director of Rippling Hope, will facilitate the training. Rippling Hope, a local faith-based non-profit, works closely with local block clubs and has coordinated hundreds of free home repairs for Detroit families.
Councilman Leland is partnering with the Mayor’s office, non-profits, local businesses, faith leaders and neighborhood organizers to tackle blight, grow current block clubs and inspire the establishment new neighborhood organizations.
“District 7 block club leaders and volunteers continue to lead Detroit’s
comeback in our neighborhoods. The high level of community participation in this effort demonstrates once again the resiliency and
strength of long-time Detroiters committed to public safety and strengthening
our neighborhoods. This coalition will
continue our aggressive fight against blight,” said Councilman Gabe
Leland.
"I hope that through this training event more neighbors will be connected with one another, those who aren't part of a block club will find out how to join or form one, and folks will learn some practical skills to fight blight in their neighborhood. This event is about empowering people to fight blight on their street, in their neighborhood and with others across the city,” said Rev. Carl Zerweck, Executive Director of Rippling Hope.
