Dear all,

at the OASIS meeting in Telluride in June I mentioned a large proposal
that I had submitted to the European Research Council (ERC) about polar
work; this has been funded and will start in May 2014. It's a very
generous (2M) single-investigator scheme and will run for 5 years. The
workpackages are:

WP1: Sea ice chamber - basically the goal is to reproduce what is on the
pretty OASIS schematic in the Shepson et al EOS article in the lab (in
small steps of course...)

WP2: 1D model: improvement of our 1D model MISTRA-Snow based on
comparisons with the chamber and field data and to include a sea ice
module into the model

WP3: Add a simple snow photochemistry module to WRF-Chem and do regional
studies and comparisons with field data

WP4: Global model studies

We will start building the sea ice chamber as soon as the project starts
and the rest will follow stepwise. I will start recruiting in January (I
hope), initially a postdoc and a PhD student. This project has the scope
for a lot of collaborations and the idea is to run the chamber in
"campaign mode", ie. to invite others with their instruments to take
part in chamber experiments. I have funding for travel and consumables
for other groups but not for staff. I am (obviously) very excited about
this and hope to be able to contribute to the goals of OASIS.

I'm looking forward to collaborations and will be in touch with
individuals from the list for specific collaborations. If you have
specific ideas for collaborations please get in touch!

Best wishes,

Roland
