All-

I wanted to ask your help to spread the word on an exciting new hiring opportunity for CRREL here in Fairbanks, Alaska. I apologize if this is a cross E-mail for some of you- we have a short fuse on this.

We have been growing our office the past few years and these are exciting times at CRREL. We are looking for a new PI to bring in, mentor, collaborate with, and get spun up as a researcher at CRREL.

The position is open NOW (today) and closes June 1.

Thank you for sending this along to the broadest number of people you can.

INFO:

Position: GS-11 Research Physical Scientist Position in Fairbanks, Alaska with the U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Lab (CRREL)

Location: Fairbanks, Alaska

Salary Range: $64,000 to 83,000 per year plus Federal Employee health and retirement benefits.

Application period open: May 21 to June 1, 2015

Applicants MUST be a U.S. citizen.

We typically hire into these positions at the recent Ph.D. or Postdoc level but a Master’s and/or a lot of experience may be suitable.

There is some text below describing the position and links on how to apply are at the bottom of this Email. Please forward this around to as many people as you feel may be interested.

My take:

We seek a Research Physical Scientist with a background in cryospheric research in the broad fields of geophysics, ecology, biogeochemistry, and/or hydrology to join a spirited and growing office of ten.

CRREL has a proud tradition of creative cryospheric research and engineering in Alaska and other cold regions. The position requires an ability to compose proposals, papers, and reports in a timely manner. Our office is closely intertwined with our main lab in Hanover, NH.

We seek a dynamic individual capable of eventually garnering their own basic or applied funded research program. We need a person who can dependably tolerate challenging Alaska and Arctic field conditions and a demanding, yet collegial, office environment.

The announcement “official” description:

As a research physical scientist you will specialize in cold regions environmental characterization of permafrost and the seasonal snowpack at a variety of spatial scales. You will be responsible for conducting remote field physical process measurements throughout Alaska and in other Arctic and subarctic terrains in order to better understand interactions among ecosystems, the cryosphere, the water cycle, and a changing climate in the Arctic and subarctic. You will support basic and applied research focused on DoD installations and research sites throughout Alaska. You will garner internal and external funding by leading and co-leading proposals; presenting research results in peer reviewed journals, project reports, and through participation in project meetings and at international research symposia. You will collaborate on research projects with the Engineer Research Development Center (ERDC) in Alaska and at other locations, marketing ERDC and the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) Alaska Research Office, and meeting customer needs through timely analysis and deliverables. This position will be located at the ERDC-CRREL Alaska Projects Office at Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

To qualify for the GS-11 level, your resume must describe at least one year of experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level which prepared you to do the work of this job. Specialized experience is defined as: conducting research related to cold regions, such as environmental characterization of permafrost and the seasonal snowpack at a variety of spatial scales. Experience in at least one of the topic areas of environmental geochemistry, soil sciences, geophysical characterization, or hydrogeology. Experience also includes identifying parameters for research and funding; garnering internal and external funding by leading or co-leading proposals. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:

·         Knowledge of Cryospheric Science

·         Skill in Conducting Research Studies

·         Skill in Developing Research Programs

·         Skill in Communication

All qualification requirements, including time-in-grade and time after competitive appointment, must be met by the closing date of this announcement.

This announcement MAY be used to fill like vacancies for six months after the closing date.

Basic Education Requirements:

A. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
