Supporting Schools: Designing Experiential Week Programs
|
The Institute for Global Learning works with about 50 schools a year on specific projects or initiatives, collaborating with school leaders and faculty, as part of our custom school services. This support is totally unique and customized for each school, meeting each school’s needs and designed for their context while drawing on the model practices and evolving research in the field. So far this school year we have worked with over twenty five different schools on a wide variety of projects including dialogue facilitator training, workshops preparing faculty to lead off-campus programs, school-wide global learning evaluation, and impact research studies.
Each year we work with a handful of schools on slightly bigger design projects, helping them create a new initiative or organize a major event. One of these projects this year has been our partnership with St Thomas Academy in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Through a series of professional learning programs and collaborative consultations with school leaders, the Institute for Global Learning is supporting the school in realizing their Vision 2030 strategic plan by creating meaningful leadership learning experiences during a new minimester program. With the support of our customized training in experiential education and our facilitated collaborative faculty design process and the leadership of faculty leaders Graciela Mancebo and David O’Connell, the school is well on its way to implementing a variety of mission-aligned offerings both on-campus and beyond.
This school year, IGL has designed custom professional learning, strategic support, and student programs for the following schools: Bishop Strachan School (ON), Boston Public Schools (MA), Calvert School (MD), Community School of Naples (FL), Crofton House (BC), Culver Academies (IN), Dalton School (NY), Deerfield Academy (MA), Friends Seminary (NY), Gil-St Bernard School (NJ), Harker School (CA), Harpeth Hall (TN), Holy Innocents Episcopal School (GA), Penn Charter (PA), Mercersburg Academy (PA), Nightingale Bamford School (NY), Providence Day School (NC), Punahou School (HI), Severn School (MD), St Andrews School (FL), St Michael’s School (TX), St Mary’s Episcopal School (TN), St Thomas Academy (MN), Thayer Academy (MA), Wellington College (UK).

Student Well-Being on Overnight Programs Guided Activity
Traveling as a group is inherently stressful - this is both normal and expected! This exercise is designed to offer program facilitators and participants time to reflect on the stressors that can arise during travel, to brainstorm on how one might cope with those stressors, and to verbalize how to request and accept assistance in support of one’s well-being.

The courses are taught on Canvas LMS and are self-paced. Developed and facilitated by Leah Rockwell, Rockwell Wellness Consulting, this course seeks to equip learners with a variety of ways that they can support student mental health in their processes and protocols leading up to travel, during travel and after travel as to mitigate risks related to student mental health crises and to support resilience development in program participants.

Model Practices for Supporting the Mental Wellness of International Exchange Students
From our partner organization CSIET.
The Council on Standards for International Educational Travel (CSIET) is a nonprofit organization committed to promoting the growth and development of the international educational exchange community. CSIET establishes standards and practices for international educational travel programs and provides support and resources to exchange programs, schools, international agents, and students.
In response to the growing need, CSIET and a committee of US and internationally based members have created the following Model Practices for Supporting the Mental Wellness of International Exchange Students. These screening and administrative practices, combined with regular training of stakeholders on their adoption and implementation, should yield significant improvement in the mental health and safety of exchange visitors at the high school level.
